According to CAFOD (Catholic Agency for Overseas Development), about 3.3 billion people now live in countries like the Philippines, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, that spend more on repaying debts than on healthcare, education or tackling the climate crisis.
That's why, we are called today more than ever, to to help these communities thrive again.

Some of the world’s poorest countries, from Kenya to Sri Lanka, are struggling with huge debt burdens, forced to pay enormous sums to international banks and…

📍 Real Story: Cordillera, Philippines
Indigenous communities say NO to mining, YES to life. Their ancestral mountains are targeted for “green energy” minerals—while the country sinks deeper into ecological debt.
🔎 Fact: The Philippines has over 60 large-scale mining projects, several under foreign-funded debt agreements.

Poultry farming has a long history in Nepal and is one of the traditional agricultural practices of the communities. It holds an important place in the rural economy. Caritas Nepal , in collaboration with SAFBIN project, distributed five chickens to a famer in Kawasoti Municipality, Nawalparasi District to provide the family with an opportunity to begin a new venture in agriculture. After two years of hard work and dedication, the five chickens given in the beginning of the program has now grown to 130 chickens and it brought significant changes to the family’s daily life.

Mutual-Affection Material Bank was established in 2014 by the Catholic Diocese of Taichung, Taiwan. For the past eleven years, we have consistently adhered to our mission of "sharing love and delivering hope," accompanying families and seniors facing adversity one after another, allowing love to become the strength that helps them get back on their feet.
From its humble beginnings as a small warehouse built to comply with local policies, it has now become a "hub of love" serving over 200 families throughout Taichung. Behind every box of rice, every bottle of oil, and every supply of supplies lies a pair of dedicated volunteers—they work tirelessly, transporting, packaging, and visiting, safeguarding the most genuine needs with their sweat and smiles.

In the peaceful village of Ahtibatta in Agailjhara upazila, Barisal, Smriti Haldar has reshaped her life—and her land—through the Doritry Project of Caritas Bangladesh Once reliant solely on rice cultivation, Smriti now grows a variety of vegetables using eco-friendly techniques and natural materials. This transformation was made possible through training and support from Caritas Bangladesh. Today, on World Food Day, celebrated globally on 16 October under the theme “Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future,” Smriti’s story stands as a powerful example of how sustainable agriculture can uplift lives and communities. In the video, Smriti shares how the Doritry Project empowered her to embrace safe food production and build a healthier future for her family and village.

🌏 Turn Debt Into Hope: A Call from Asia’s Church Leaders

Rich nations must own their social and ecological debt — for centuries of resource extraction and emissions — and deliver fair, accessible, debt-free climate finance so communities in the Global South can recover with dignity.

We join Caritas Internationalis in calling for justice:
💧 Cancel ecological debt, not lives.
🌿 End deforestation by 2030.
⚡ Commit to just energy transitions.
🌍 Ensure climate decisions include communities and faith voices.
💰 Stop financing fossil fuels and extractive projects.

The Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC) stands with Caritas and all people of faith for a new economy that serves life, not profit — one that restores creation, uplifts the poor, and secures our common home.

✊ Together, let’s

In this Jubilee Year, as we celebrate the 111th World Day of Migrants and Refugees, we recall the words of Pope Leo XIV from his message that migrants are missionaries of hope and peace, called to build bridges and renew our communities.

With a global presence, Caritas organisations and faith communities support migrants and refugees, helping them rebuild their lives and defend their dignity. Sadly, many still face dangerous journeys, trafficking, detention and hostility.

The Jubilee of Migrants and Refugees is a time to recognise their dignity and contribution and to renew our commitment to building a world that is more just and fraternal.

📍 Real Story: Bangladesh
In the Satkhira district of Bangladesh, saltwater intrusion from rising seas has made rice farming nearly impossible. Women now walk miles daily to fetch drinkable water. The community is trapped between the climate crisis and rising debt from adaptation loans.
🔎 Fact: Bangladesh loses 2,000 hectares of arable land annually to saltwater intrusion. Meanwhile, debt service consumes more than 10% of its national budget.
✊ Call to Action: It’s unjust to force vulnerable nations to borrow for damages they didn’t cause.
