Joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce in Thailand A Voice of the Foreign Business Community in Thailand for the Past 50 Years

It was back in 1976 that the entire foreign community of business people joined in an idea where the American Chamber invited members of the British, French, German and Japanese chambers to attend a meeting with the Prime Minister. A foreign business organization which came to be known as the Joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce in Thailand (JFCCT) was formed. We work with the Royal Thai government

and various government agencies such as the Board of Trade, Board of Investment and the Federation of Thai Industries and many sector-specific agencies, and by way of advice and recommendation to foreign governments – for the benefit of the Thai economy.

The Thai-Pakistan Chamber of Commerce - TPCC was established to strengthen and expand trade and economic cooperation between Thailand and Pakistan. In this edition of the JFCCT Interview Series, we spoke with President Abdul Ghaffar Warsi to learn more about the Chamber’s mission, achievements, and future direction.

President Abdul began his professional journey in Thailand as a restaurateur specializing in Pakistani cuisine. His restaurant soon became a gathering point for the growing Pakistani community. He recalled how this early role evolved into something larger. “Before I could even realize, I had become an informal ambassador to Pakistani visitors for guiding them to local market places and connecting them with a law firm for their business ventures and permits. My role in the community inspired me to step up to a formal and much organized role to work for the welfare of my community and to advocate for my newly found home, Thailand. Over the years since I joined the Chamber in 2005, I served in various leadership roles. In 2021, I assumed the Presidency of the Chamber, a position I hold with great pride and a strong commitment to advancing our bilateral business relations.”

Discussing TPCC’s membership profile, President Abdul explained that the Chamber represents a diverse yet close‑knit group of enterprises “Our members are business entities and they vary from a large-scale labor-intensive enterprise to service industries with limited workforce needed. Our membership is small, made up of 48 companies. It includes businesses such as food, gems and jewelry, auto parts and machinery, together with service industries. These sectors reflect the Chamber’s broad mandate to support companies operating across both traditional and emerging industries, including food exports, gems and jewelry, and machinery trade.”

TPCC continues to play an active role in promoting bilateral cooperation. President Abdul highlighted two key achievements from the past year. He recalled, “Last year, the Chamber proudly achieved two significant milestones. First, we commemorated the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Muslim Business Matching during the Business Forum 2025: Synergy for Success, marking an important step toward strengthening cross-border business collaboration. Another highlight was a joint delegation from TPCC and the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in Thailand that visited Kwangpaisan Food Products Co., Ltd. Together with the Governor of Trang Province, the delegation explored potential opportunities in seafood processing. These achievements reflect our continued dedication to enhancing trade relations and opening new pathways for economic growth between Thailand and Pakistan.”

Looking ahead, President Abdul envisions deeper integration between the two economies through diversification, investment, and improved market access. He explained, “By supporting SMEs, encouraging joint ventures, and enhancing supply-chain integration, we aim to create sustainable business opportunities that benefit both Thai and Pakistani entrepreneurs while deepening economic and cultural ties between our countries. In my opinion, FTA could make trade easier, and both countries have industries that complement each other. Thailand’s investments, Pakistan’s growing food and halal exports, tourism links, and better supply-chain connections can all help boost business between the two nations.” His vision aligns with broader regional trends in SME development, halal industry growth, and future FTA potential.

President Abdul emphasized that TPCC’s progress is the result of collective effort. He credited, “As a Chamber, our efforts are put towards presenting promising opportunities of trade, merger or even R&D for a few for scalability. TPCC aspires to engage stakeholders in an appropriate environment which includes organizing trade missions, B2B meetings, and industry-focused networking events with joint delegations. We have also successfully guided numerous businesses by providing advocacy and policy support, particularly in areas such as regulations, logistics, and SME-friendly trade policies.”

President Abdul concluded with an invitation to discover Pakistan’s natural and cultural richness. “Since the pandemic, Pakistan’s tourism sector has steadily recovered, with rising visitor numbers and increasing global interest in its natural and cultural destinations. Continued promotion and infrastructure development are supporting the industry’s long-term growth. I would like to invite the readers to enlist Pakistan on their bucket list for our unique and vibrant culture and a scenic reset with a trip up North.”

The Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce (SweCham), established in 1989, has long been a pillar of the Thai-Swedish and international business community in Thailand. JFCCT spoke with President Peter Björk to learn more about the chamber’s evolution and its role in strengthening bilateral business ties.

President Peter has chaired SweCham for the past six years and previously served as Executive Director for both SweCham and the EABC. He shared, “I am a Swedish executive who has lived in Bangkok for almost 30 years. My studies include Master-level Change Management from Sweden, and I have spent 40 years working in organizational development, training, and leadership development—as a consultant, manager, and entrepreneur. My latest startup, SIIS – the Scandinavian Institute of Innovation and Sustainability – organizes youth camps in Sweden and Innovation and Digitalization programs for executives.”

Reflecting on SweCham’s membership, President Peter noted, “Today we have 125 members across a wide range of industries. Most are SMEs, but we also count major Swedish multinationals such as Ericsson, SAAB, and IKEA among our members. Ericsson will celebrate 120 years in Thailand in 2026, which is truly remarkable. Our core sectors include engineering, telecom, defense, medicine, retail, and innovation-driven technology. We also see a growing number of Swedish entrepreneurs entering the Thai market with sustainability-focused solutions and creative-industry ventures in gaming, music, and food.”

President Peter is particularly proud of SweCham’s active role in fostering business cooperation between Sweden and Thailand. “We host events for our members and collaborate closely with Team Sweden, including the Embassy and Business Sweden on joint initiatives. We aim to design activities that meet the diverse needs of our different member groups.”

Under his leadership, several strategic priorities have guided the chamber’s development. “First, we focused on growth to ensure a strong membership base and financial stability. To achieve this, we sharpened our services and strengthened our CRM approach. We also launched a project to improve administrative processes and digital banking systems. At the same time, we are building a completely new, young, and energetic team ready to serve our members and set a new benchmark. We continuously eliminate non–value-added activities and keep our members at the center of everything we do.”

When asked about the factors behind SweCham’s success, President Peter emphasized unity and shared purpose. “We have avoided negative internal politics and instead focused on a common vision and clear goals. Our Board is highly supportive, with a healthy balance of large companies and SMEs, as well as a mix of experience and innovative thinking. Another key factor is recruiting and developing new staff, including both Swedish and Thai interns; to build an efficient and forward-looking team.”

In closing, President Peter reflected on the chamber’s ongoing evolution. “Times are changing, and we must adapt to remain relevant to all our stakeholders. For example, our new team is using AI and process-development tools so we can devote more time to our members through strong CRM - Customer Relationship Management.”

The Joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce in Thailand (JFCCT) has issued a Statement of Encouragement on the importance of advancing clean air legislation for Thailand’s competitiveness, public health, and economic resilience.

Air pollution remains a serious challenge affecting quality of life, workforce productivity, business confidence, tourism, hospitality, retail, SMEs, and Thailand’s long-term investment attractiveness.

JFCCT encourages continued progress using the existing draft bill as the basis for advancement, with practical implementation measures including transition periods, a proportionate phased introduction, and the use of sub-regulations for technical details where appropriate.

We welcome constructive dialogue with government, parliament, and stakeholders, and stand ready to share international experience and practical business perspectives in support of a cleaner, healthier, and more competitive Thailand.

Thailand’s export competitiveness is weakening as global freight costs surge 30%, raising concerns over trade and consumer prices, a shipping industry leader said.

While the United States and Iran have reached a two-week ceasefire, ongoing uncertainty continues to disrupt shipping routes and supply chains.

Robin Loh, Chairman of the Singapore-Thai Chamber of Commerce and Country Director of Dawn Shipping, warned that end consumers would ultimately face higher retail prices.

“Thailand is facing risks and uncertainty due to high freight costs, disrupted shipping routes and energy volatility, all of which are weakening export competitiveness. Logistics costs will rise and trade flows will slow further. Eventually, consumers will have to absorb these additional costs,” he said.

On Monday, 30 March 2026, the Joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce in Thailand (JFCCT), through its Sustainable Development Committee, hosted Navigating Climate Risks and Capturing Opportunities in a Rapidly Changing World at the HSBC Building in Bangkok, in partnership with HSBC Thailand and UN Global Compact Network Thailand (GCNT).

The event brought together around 45 business leaders and sustainability professionals for an interactive executive workshop focused on translating climate risk into concrete business and investment decisions.

Opening the session, Giorgio Gamba, CEO and Head of Banking, HSBC Thailand, welcomed participants, followed by remarks from Dr. Thanyaporn Krichtitayawuth, Executive Director of GCNT, Dr. Supareak Charlie Chomchan representing JFCCT, and Martin Venzky-Stalling, Chair of the JFCCT Sustainable Development Committee. The session was positioned as a practical, decision-oriented lab designed to move beyond awareness toward strategic application.

Two keynote speakers set the strategic context. Ms. Charika Channuntapipat, SVP, Sustainable Investment Strategy & Ecosystems at the Stock Exchange of Thailand, spoke on the link between climate mitigation, adaptation, and shareholder value. Ms. Pritya Pravina Widiarta, Director, Sustainability & Climate Change (South & Southeast Asia) at HSBC, highlighted the interconnections between energy security, climate risk, electrification, and capital allocation.

The core of the session was the Climate Conquest simulation, facilitated by Sanit “Onn” Sirikolkarn, Founder of P24 Solutions. Participants worked in teams through forward-looking scenarios from 2025 to 2050, navigating policy shifts, market dynamics, and physical climate risks through real-time investment and operational decisions.

The simulation helped turn complex climate strategy into tangible business trade-offs, with participants reflecting positively on its practical and interactive format. A key takeaway was that climate action is not separate from business performance, but central to risk management, value protection, and long-term resilience. Discussions also emphasised that climate and nature-related risks are increasingly interconnected, with implications for assets, portfolios, and competitiveness.

This event reflects JFCCT’s continued commitment to convening the business community in Thailand around practical sustainability challenges and forward-looking business solutions.
