📢【DISG Newsletter Vol.56】 “Parliamentary Vice-Minister Komori Visits Malaysia”

Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry KOMORI Taku visited Malaysia from August 25 to 28, 2026, to engage in wide-ranging discussions with senior Malaysian government officials on energy transition, green transformation (GX), industrial cooperation, investment, critical minerals, and food export expansion.

• Held high-level consultations with Minister Johari (MITI) on automotive cooperation, data center investments, and GX
• Agreed with Deputy Minister Syed Ibrahim (NRES) to enhance critical mineral supply chains and accelerate signing the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) MoC
• Confirmed strengthening AZEC under POWERR Asia with Deputy Sec-Gen Nor Azmi ahead of the October Ministerial Meeting, welcoming progress on CCS
• Promoted Japanese tea under the 10,000 Exporters Program, held business sessions with JETRO KL and local representatives, and inspected retail hubs.

The visit reaffirmed Japan and Malaysia's commitment to advancing industrial cooperation, energy transition, and supply chain resilience under their strategic partnership.

📢【DISG Newsletter Vol.55】 “Japan-Vietnam: Deputy PM Giang's Courtesy Call on Chief Cabinet Secretary KIHARA”
Chief Cabinet Secretary KIHARA Minoru received a courtesy call from Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Phan Van Giang in Tokyo on July 13:
• Welcomed continued high-level exchanges between Japan and Viet Nam, including Prime Minister TAKAICHI Sanae’s official visit to Viet Nam in May
• Agreed to further strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly in the security field
• Confirmed coordination on regional and international issues, including the Middle East, the East and South China Seas, North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs and abductions issue, and Myanmar
The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the Japan–Viet Nam “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” toward the realization of the updated “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)”.

Waste as a Resource, Not Trash: Challenging the Circular Recycling Model in Vietnam
Rapid urbanization in Vietnam has made waste management a major challenge, and innovative Japanese technology is playing a vital role in providing solutions.
Key projects include a waste-to-energy plant generating 11.6 MW of clean power from 500 tons of waste daily, and biomass power initiatives using agricultural waste such as rice husks. Furthermore, industrial waste is being fully recycled into fuel and raw materials for cement.
Moving beyond traditional 'support,' Japanese companies are partnering with Vietnam to achieve 'green growth' and a circular economy through cutting-edge technology.

Foreign Minister MOTEGI Toshimitsu met with Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Maria Theresa Lazaro on the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations to further strengthen the Japan–Philippines Comprehensive Strategic Partnership:
• Welcomed the entry into force of the Japan–Philippines Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement (ACSA) and agreed to strengthen regional peace and stability through ODA and OSA
• Discussed cooperation on ASEAN and regional issues, including the South China Sea
• Agreed to further promote bilateral economic cooperation
The meeting reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to deepening their partnership toward the realization of the updated “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)”.

Zero Waste & Giant Algae — Japanese Tech Supporting Malaysia’s Decarbonization
Malaysia aims to achieve net-zero by 2050, and Japanese companies' innovative technologies are supporting this ambitious goal.
One key focus is green innovation. Projects include 100% recycling of industrial waste into cement fuel and a national-level initiative producing algae on a massive scale at one of the world’s largest facilities for next-generation fuel.
Through both technology and financing, Japan is walking with Malaysia as a strategic partner to carve out a sustainable future.

• Reaffirm Japan’s support for ASEAN Centrality, unity, the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, and the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP)
• Strengthen regional peace and security through maritime security, cybersecurity, responses to cross-border crime, and continued support for stability in the East and South China Seas and Myanmar
• Advance ASEAN-Japan cooperation in AI, digital connectivity, energy security, and energy transition through initiatives including the AI Co-Creation Initiative, Digital Corridor, POWERR Asia, and AZEC
• Promote Mekong-Japan cooperation in energy, cross-border crime, water resource management, cybersecurity, and connectivity, while continuing long-term capacity building for Palestine through CEAPAD
The meetings reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to strengthening ASEAN’s “autonomy” and “resilience” through closer cooperation across security, economic, digital, and energy fields.

ASEAN accounted for 21.4% of the responses as the 'most important future export destination' for Japanese companies, ranking second in the world after the United States.

In particular, Vietnam and Thailand are highly valued as key business hubs for market growth and diversification of sales channels.
