Nudibranchs
Tiny, colourful and seriously underrated!
We’re out on Koh Tao doing nudibranch surveys, spotting, identifying and recording these little sea slugs to help us understand what’s living on our reefs. With over 152 to spot, we're spoilt.

No two dives are the same… you never know what you’ll find.

Microplastics might be tiny, but the problem definitely isn’t.

Our latest microplastic survey around Koh Tao found:

• 486 - polystyrene balls
• 39 - polystyrene pieces
• 15 - secondary microplastics in various colours
• 3 - primary mesoplastics
• 1 - secondary mesoplastic

It’s pretty eye-opening to see just how much plastic can be hiding in the sand and surrounding environment.

Every survey helps us understand what’s ending up in our ocean and gives us more data to work with.

Small pieces, big problem

🌊 Don’t just pick up the trash. Make it count.

Every piece of rubbish we find underwater tells us something about what’s happening to our ocean.

When we remove it AND record it online, we’re not just cleaning up, we’re creating real data that helps track where the waste is coming from, what’s ending up in the sea, and where action is needed most.

One bottle might not seem like much. But thousands of divers collecting and reporting what they find? That creates a bigger picture.

🤿 Dive. Find it. Remove it. Report it.
Your dive can make a difference above and below the surface.

8 months, 34 clean ups and 32,373 items of trash collected and removed from our beaches.

While cleaning the beach we track all the trash we pick up with Ocean Conservancy CleanSwell, giving GPS data on what rubbish is found where. Data that is then used to change policies and tackle ocean trash at a global scale.

Want to join in and help protect our marine environment? We run clean ups every Thursday at 09.30 so just turn up and join the tribe!

Key Species on the Reef

When we’re diving, it’s easy to focus on the colourful fish and forget that they all have different jobs to do on the reef.

Parrotfish are important grazers. They spend a lot of their time eating algae from the reef surface. This helps keep algae under control and reduces competition for space where corals can grow. As they graze, they also scrape tiny amounts of dead coral and rock, which eventually contributes to the sand around tropical reefs.

Butterflyfish have a different role. Many species feed on coral polyps, while others feed on algae and small invertebrates. Because they are closely linked to the reef for food, seeing different butterflyfish species can also tell us something about the reef community.

Neither fish is necessarily doing something that looks dramatic, they’re simply feeding, swimming and getting on with their day. But all those small interactions add up and help shape the reef ecosystem.

So next time you see a parrotfish or butterflyfish, stop for a second and watch what it’s doing. There’s usually more going on than meets the eye!

Thank you for the super pictures Tim Long
