South East Asia Dose Optimisation Trial of Tafenoquine (SEADOT) – Site Visit SMRU
Dr. Cindy Chu (SEADOT PI) and Dr. Abhijit Mishra (Research physician) visited SMRU from August 6-12th. SEADOT is a multi-country randomized controlled trial designed to evaluate whether a 50% higher dose of tafenoquine offers superior efficacy compared to the currently approved dose. Their visit provided an opportunity to engage with clinical teams, review ongoing trial activities, and strengthen relationships across the MORU network.
At Mae Ramat Hospital (MRMH), the study team, led by Dr. Suttha Phatrakitrungruang (MRMH Hospital Director) and Mrs. Patima Sila (Lead nursing research staff), shared challenges in their experiences with patient enrollment and documentation processes. The tour of the hospital facilities was particularly insightful, covering key operational areas such as the screening station, laboratory services, and the admissions ward. The team’s commitment to maintaining high standards of clinical research was evident throughout the visit.
At the SMRU Maw Ker Thai clinic, Dr. Aung Pyae Phyo (SEADOT Co-investigator), Dr. May Thu Thu Aung (Research physician), and the study team have enrolled over 100 participants into the study. Dr. Aung noted a significant increase in cases this year, largely attributed to ongoing instability along the border and population movement. These challenging conditions have made participant follow-up challenging.
During the visit, refresher training was provided to the laboratory staff and research teams at MRMH and SMRU MawkerThai. The study teams face logistical complexities of tracing patients in a dynamic border region, and their efforts to minimising lost to the 4-month follow-up are commendable.
Many thanks to everyone from SMRU, MRMH, LOMWRU and MORU for their hard work and contribution to improving the radical cure against P. vivax malaria.
