Makha Bucha Day

“Refraining from all sins,
Cultivating wholesome deeds,
Purifying the mind.”

These three principles are the essence of the teachings in the Ovāda Pāṭimokkha, which the Lord Buddha delivered to the monastic assembly for the first time, nine months after attaining enlightenment, on the full moon day of the third lunar month.

Makha Bucha Day is marked by an extraordinary event, where four auspicious occurrences took place simultaneously, known as the Cāturaṅgasannipāta, which are as follows:

• The day coincided with the full moon of the third lunar month, when the moon was in the constellation of Magha.
• A total of 1,250 Buddhist monks gathered spontaneously at Veluvana Monastery in Rajagriha, Magadha, without prior arrangement, to pay homage to the Lord Buddha.
• All the monks present were Arahants, fully enlightened beings who had attained the six higher spiritual faculties (Abhiññā).
• Every one of these monks had been ordained directly by the Buddha through the method known as Ehi Bhikkhu Upasampadā.

Seeing this as an opportune moment, the Lord Buddha designated this assembly as a special gathering to deliver the Ovāda Pāṭimokkha, outlining the principles, ideology, and methodology for propagating Buddhism. These teachings serve as the fundamental principles of Buddhism, which all Buddhists should adhere to as the guiding framework for their practice toward liberation from suffering. They also remain the cornerstone for spreading Buddhism to this day.

Buddhists can apply these teachings into their lives for their own well-being, as well as for the benefit of others and society.

• Refraining from all sins refers to observing the Five Precepts, avoiding the ten unwholesome deeds (Akusala Kamma-patha), and abstaining from harmful actions.
• Cultivating wholesome deeds involves practicing the ten meritorious actions (Kusala Kamma-patha), engaging in virtuous conduct, and performing good deeds.
• Purifying the mind means cleansing the mind of defilements such as greed, anger, delusion, distraction, and despair by training in wisdom and cultivating right understanding. When wisdom arises, one perceives reality as it truly is, causing defilements and suffering to lose their grip on the mind.

If individuals in society uphold these teachings as guiding principles in their lives, society will flourish in peace and harmony—free from oppression and exploitation, filled with loving-kindness, compassion, and mutual support.

Buddhism is the only religion that teaches a path leading to complete liberation from suffering. Buddhists should recognize the great fortune of being born in an era where the Buddha’s teachings remain fully intact. They should strive to practice according to these teachings to gradually diminish defilements, reducing greed, anger, and delusion, which are the root causes of suffering. By doing so, they can ultimately eradicate suffering altogether, just as many noble disciples of the Buddha have done.

On this auspicious occasion of Makha Bucha Day, we invite all Buddhists to engage in meritorious activities by offering alms, making an offer of incense, candles, and flowers to the Triple Gem, observing Uposatha (Eight Precepts), listening to Buddhist discourses, and participating in the candlelight procession (Wian Tian) at temples.

In addition, let us reflect upon the Buddha’s teachings and apply them in our daily lives to cultivate inner peace and wisdom
