🇺🇸✨ 𝟐𝟓𝟎 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐨𝐦 𝟐𝟓𝟎 – 𝐊𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐟𝐟 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲

As we celebrate the 𝟐𝟓𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚, we proudly launch our campaign highlighting the inspiring journeys of Togolese alumni of U.S. Department of State exchange programs.

We begin this series with the powerful story of:

𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐢 𝐓𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐊𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢, 𝐏𝐡𝐃
Microbiologist and Public Health Researcher | Fulbright Scholar (2024)

As a Fulbright Scholar and Master of Epidemiology student at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, one of the oldest formal schools of public health in the United States, I advanced my research in infectious disease epidemiology and population health through strengthened data-driven approaches aimed at reducing health disparities and improving public health responses in low- and middle-income countries.
I had the incredible opportunity to serve as an intern for the prestigious Epi Scholar program at New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, one of the largest local public health departments in the world, serving more than 8.5 million New York City residents.
Within this department, I conducted a project focused on evaluating and addressing the emotional and mental health needs of more than 200,000 asylum seekers living in New York City.
This evidence-based, data-driven approach provided city leaders with critical information to support informed policies aimed at improving access to healthcare, insurance, housing, psychological services, and mental health support for this vulnerable population.
The Fulbright Program transformed my perspective, deepened my commitment to global health equity, and strengthened my ability to contribute to sustainable health systems worldwide.
Through my commitment to leadership, service, and community impact, I was honored to receive two milestone awards from the university:
• The 2026 Dean’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Student Leadership and Excellence Award
• The 2026 Public Health Alumni Association Student Leadership Award
With sincere gratitude to the United States Department of State, I proudly join in celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States — Happy 250th Anniversary, America!
