Environmental Health Officers, together with interns from the University of Eswatini (Faculty of Health Sciences) conducted food inspections across the Nkhaba to Luvunjelweni corridor in the Hhohho Region.

This activity forms part of an ongoing exercise aimed at promoting food safety and safeguard public health within our communities.

Inspections are intensifying across the country as it has been observed that compliance requirements with the countryโ€™s laws is minimal in a number of business establishments.

On the other hand, food borne illnesses remain a threat to public health, hence the need for coordinated efforts in ensuring food safety in the country.

Environmental Health: The Heart of Preventive Services in the Health Sector

Environmental health services remain at the core of public health protection, community wellbeing, and sustainable national development. Therefore, it is important to acknowledge the commitment, resilience, and professionalism demonstrated by the diverse cadres within environmental health, including Environmental Health Officers and Assistants, Public Health Inspectors, Sanitation Inspectors, Waste Management Personnel, Vector Control Officers, Port Health Officers, WASH specialists, Community Health Promoters, etc. Collectively, they represent a dedicated workforce devoted to protecting populations and ensuring that communities live in safe, clean, and healthy environments that support human development.

Their responsibilities extend well beyond routine inspections and regulatory enforcement. Environmental health professionals play a critical role in identifying and managing environmental risks, preventing disease outbreaks, maintaining sanitation standards, and enforcing public health regulations. They safeguard water quality, food safety, oversee waste management systems, control and prevent disease transmission, and promote hygiene awareness and environmentally responsible practices within communities. Through these efforts, they serve as the often-unseen guardians of public health whose contributions are essential to societal wellbeing.

Environmental health professionals also make a significant contribution to national development by creating the conditions necessary for economic productivity, educational achievement, and resilient communities. Safe water, proper sanitation, clean surroundings, safe food and effective vector control are fundamental requirements for sustainable growth and improved quality of life. Their work directly supports national and global priorities related to public health, climate resilience, environmental sustainability, and sustainable urban development.

As the world continues to face emerging environmental challenges, climate-related pressures, and evolving public health threats, environmental health professionals remain indispensable in building a healthier and more sustainable future. Their leadership in advancing best practices in hygiene, waste segregation, pollution prevention, food safety, sanitation, and environmental stewardship encourages responsible behaviour across households, institutions, and communities. Their professionalism, ethical conduct, and commitment to human dignity continue to strengthen public trust and reinforce the value of environmental health services.

Through their tireless efforts, environmental health professionals protect lives, strengthen public health systems, and inspire collective responsibility towards achieving cleaner, safer, and healthier communities for present and future generations.

Another day, another van load of food unfit for human consumption. Nkomazi and surrounding areas in the Hhohho region had a surprise visit from Environmental Health Officers. Shops were inspected and everything deemed unfit for human consumption and posed a threat to human health was condemned for destruction.

A significant highlight was one particular owner who displayed reluctance to cooperate by challenging progress of the inspection. Thanks to Royal Eswatini Police Services Officers who were onsite during the operation, order was instilled and no stone was left unturned.

Together we are going to end the buying and selling of unsafe food. Be vigilant consumers.

Officers from the Ministry of Health, through the Environmental Health Department were out and about, conducting inspections in food establishments at Luve and Mliba business areas. With assistance from Manzini Municipality, Matsapha Town Council and the Royal Eswatini Police Service.

Unsafe food items (expired, damaged, rusted, re-packed, spoiled, unlabelled, etc) were condemned and disposed of in a landfill.

This exercise is aimed at protecting the health of the public by ensuring that only safe food is presented for sale in all registered food establishments.

On another note, business owners also run losses when their stock is seized and the environment suffers as food waste is considered a major driver of climate change.

Food suppliers, retailers, consumers and regulators are urged join forces in safe guarding the health of the public, protecting the environment and making meaningful monetary gains through the sale of safe food.

Let us all be vigilant when purchasing food items and ensure that they are within stipulated dates of expiry, condition and quality is not compromised as well as being in original packaging to be rendered free from contamination.
