Melisa is among the first young women in Eswatini to receive lenacapavir (LEN), a twice-yearly injectable form of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) that is nearly 100% effective at preventing HIV.

For adolescent girls and young women – who account for nearly a quarter of new HIV infections in sub-Saharan Africa – LEN could be a game-changer.

In less than a year after regulatory approval, The Global Fund and partners have delivered LEN to 10 of the world’s highest HIV-burden countries, with 24 countries expected to receive it by the end of the year.

At the 26th International AIDS Conference, Melisa’s story highlights a turning point in global health equity. For the first time, a major HIV prevention innovation is being introduced in both high- and low-income countries at the same time – closing a gap that once cost millions of lives.

For health leaders on the frontline of the HIV response, like Dr. Dube, this moment represents a potential turning point. The impact could be transformative if access is expanded widely and equitably.

For Dr. Dube, an AIDS-free generation is within reach: “I don’t think it’s a possibility – I know it is.”

The Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM) serves as a vital multi-sectoral platform, representing communities affected by the three diseases supported by the Global Fund: Malaria, Tuberculosis, and HIV. Yesterday, the CCM held its quarterly meeting, bringing together diverse representatives and constituencies who shared insights, contributed ideas, and posed critical questions on the implementation of the Global Fund Grant in Eswatini.
As the nation prepares for the next grant cycle, this session proved to be insightful, informative, and highly engaging, equipping all representatives to ensure that upcoming activities deliver meaningful impact for those most affected at the community level

One of the key mandates of the Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM) is to facilitate meetings through multi-sectoral engagements that foster inclusivity in the implementation of the Global Fund Grant. In line with this mandate, and as part of ongoing grant implementation and preparations for the upcoming grant application, the Key Populations represented within the CCM convened an impactful dialogue with Principal Recipients, CANGO, and HealthPlus 4Men; a sub-recipient actively implementing activities on the ground.
The purpose of this engagement was twofold: to review the progress achieved to date and to identify existing gaps that require realignment. This process is essential to strengthening the effectiveness of the next grant cycle and ensuring that future interventions are both inclusive and strategically responsive to the needs of all populations affected by the three disease.
