BREAKING THE SILENCE TOGETHER

For the past seven days, we have spoken about human rights defenders, civil society, underreporting, fear, reprisals, and the importance of protecting victims.

Our message is simple:
Silence does not mean that nothing is happening.
Many human rights violations remain unreported because victims and witnesses are afraid of what may happen if they speak.

As a society, we must work together to create safer spaces for victims.
We must listen without judgement.
We must protect confidentiality.
We must stand against intimidation and reprisals.
We must support human rights defenders.
We must strengthen civil society.
And we must continue documenting and speaking against injustice.
The Swaziland Human Rights Defenders Network remains committed to promoting a safer and more enabling environment for human rights defenders and supporting the protection of human rights.
Together, we can break the silence. Together, we can defend human rights.

PROTECT THOSE WHO DEFEND HUMAN RIGHTS

Human rights defenders often work in difficult and dangerous environments.

- Some experience intimidation.
- Some receive threats.
- Some face surveillance.
- Some are harassed because of their work.
- Others experience isolation, stigma, or attacks simply because they stand with victims and vulnerable communities.

Protecting human rights defenders is essential to protecting human rights themselves.

A society where defenders are afraid to work is a society where violations can flourish in silence.

We call for an environment where all human rights defenders can carry out their legitimate work safely, freely, and without fear of reprisals.

When we protect human rights defenders, we protect everyone’s rights.

THE HUMAN COST OF UNDERREPORTING

Behind every human rights violation is a human being…
- A mother.�- A father.�- A young person.�- A worker.�- A journalist.�- A human rights defender.�- A community member.

When violations go unreported, victims can become invisible.

- Their pain remains undocumented.
- Patterns of abuse may continue unnoticed.
- Perpetrators may escape accountability.
- Other victims may become afraid to come forward.

Underreporting does not only hide statistics. It hides human experiences, suffering, and injustice.

We must listen to victims.
We must protect those who speak.
We must document violations safely and responsibly.

Every victim deserves to be heard, protected, and treated with dignity.

CIVIL SOCIETY IS ESSENTIAL TO A JUST SOCIETY

Civil society organisations play a critical role in protecting human rights, promoting accountability, supporting vulnerable communities, documenting violations, and amplifying the voices of those who may otherwise never be heard.

When civil society is threatened, intimidated, restricted, or silenced, the entire society suffers.
A healthy society needs independent voices.

- It needs organisations that can question injustice.
- It needs journalists who can report freely.
- It needs human rights defenders who can work without fear.
- It needs citizens who can speak, organise, assemble, and participate in decisions affecting their lives.

Protecting civic space means protecting democracy, dignity, and human rights.

WHO IS A HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDER?
A human rights defender is not necessarily someone with a title, an office, or an organisation.
A human rights defender can be a journalist exposing injustice.
A woman speaking against gender-based violence.
A community member defending people affected by mining or environmental injustice.
A lawyer representing victims of human rights violations.
A trade unionist defending workers’ rights.
A young person demanding accountability.
Or an ordinary citizen standing up for the dignity and rights of others.
Human rights defenders are everywhere.
They are individuals and communities who refuse to remain silent when injustice happens.
Defending human rights is not a crime.
