Collective Digital Security

Digital security is a collective responsibility within human rights movements. When one defender is compromised, entire networks can be placed at risk. Building a culture of shared digital safety strengthens movements, protects individuals and reinforce solidarity among defenders.

Social Media Safety

Social media is a powerful tool for advocacy, but it can also expose defenders to surveillance and harassment. Reviewing privacy settings, limiting personal information and being mindful of what is shared online can reduce risks. Visibility should never come at the expense of safety.

Secure Communication

Sensitive conversations require secure communication channels. Using encrypted messaging platforms and avoiding unsecured networks helps protect confidential information. Secure communication is essential for maintaining trust, safety and confidentiality in human rights work.

Phishing and Online Scams

Many cyber attacks begin with phishing emails or messages designed to create fear or urgency. Human rights diffenders should be cautious of suspicious links, unexpected attachments, or messages from unknown sources. When unsure, it is safer not to click and to verify information through trusted channels.

Two-Factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of protection to online accounts. Even if a password is compromised, this additional step can prevent unauthorised access. Enabling two-factor authentication helps protect personal data, networks, and sensitive human rights work from digital threats.

Password Safety

Weak or reused passwords make it easy for attackers to access sensitive information. Human rights defenders should use strong, unique passwords that are difficult to guess and avoid sharing them across platforms. Taking passwords security seriously is a simple but powerful step toward digital protection.

Every day in Swaziland, human rights defenders continue their work despite intimidation, surveillance, and shrinking civic space. Their courage reminds us that defending human rights is not a crime it is a duty. We stand in solidarity with every defender working to protect communities, demand justice, and build a more democratic future.

As SHRDN, we recognize that defending human rights means defending the rights of everyone, including those who face exclusion and discrimination because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

To our LGBTI+ community, we see you, we celebrate you, and we walk beside you in the journey toward justice. Together, our voices are stronger, our resistance louder, and our future brighter.

๐Ÿค“๐Ÿค“๐Ÿค“FRIDAY DIGEST ๐Ÿค“๐Ÿค“๐Ÿค“

We have Social media posts circulating in Eswatini accusing Bishop Vincent JV Hlatjwako of Rest in Christ Ministries of severely assaulting his wife and daughter during a domestic dispute. These reports claim that the assault occurred in front of children and that church leaders later protected him instead of the victims. As of today, no official legal charges or police statements have been issued to confirm or deny these allegations and the church is still not clear or the matter but in a statement released they said this is a private matter. GBV IS A PUBLIC MATTER & YES A GLOBAL PANDEMIC.

Protecting voices. Defending freedoms. Promoting justice.

๐Ÿ“ข Statement: By Abigail Jele

The Swaziland Human Rights Defenders Network (SHRDN) strongly condemns all forms of gender-based violence, particularly when committed by individuals in positions of religious authority, who are expected to uphold moral and ethical standards.

While the allegations against Bishop Vincent JV Hlatjwako remain unconfirmed, the reported abuse involving the brutal beating of a woman and her daughter raises deep human rights concerns.

Therefore We call for:

๐Ÿ”บ A thorough and impartial investigation by law enforcement
๐Ÿ”บ Protection of survivors from further intimidation
๐Ÿ”บ Transparency and accountability from religious institutions
๐Ÿ”บ Public awareness to challenge harmful patriarchal and spiritual power dynamics

๐Ÿ›‘ NOTE ๐Ÿ›‘Abuse is abuse โ€” whether in private homes, public offices, or pulpits. It must not be justified or shielded in the name of faith.

As a Network, we remain committed to:
โ€ข Upholding the rights and dignity of survivors
โ€ข Challenging impunity and silence
โ€ข Demanding justice where human rights are violated
