Every person deserves to be seen, recognised, and given a place to belong. Sixty-five years ago, the world came together to adopt the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness — a promise that no one should be left without a nationality, or the rights and opportunities that come with it.

This September, join YSDC as we mark that milestone under the theme "65 Years of the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness: Gains, Gaps and Urgent Action," taking stock of what's been gained, what gaps remain, and the urgent action still needed to close them. The voices of Swazis who continue to live on the margins of society due to gender discrimination in Eswatini’s nationality laws and statelessness were recently brought to the fore through YSDC’s participation in the 53rd Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Pre-Sessions in Geneva, Switzerland. The UPR is an innovative and integral tool for global advocacy developed in 2006 by the UN Human Rights Commission for its ability to not only engage states in a peer-review process of human rights, but also to integrate and recognize the importance of community voices through the participation of civil society organisations, effectively bringing to life the lived realities of affected persons.

Our participation was an opportunity for state representatives to hear about the impacts of, and actions required to effectively close the gaps in accessing nationality rights in Eswatini. We were able to give perspectives from affected persons, and gave a concrete call to action. This engagement builds on our sustained work both nationally and globally to ensure Eswatini realizes its 2019 commitments to reducing statelessness promoting equal rights for all.

In the month of August, LCOY Eswatini 2026 successfully executed a series of decentralized regional climate dialogues that engaged over 200 young innovators, farmers, and advocates. This strategic framework was designed to intentionally decentralize climate governance in Eswatini, ensuring that grassroots realities directly inform and shape top-level climate policies.

The initiative achieved robust and inclusive regional representation by drawing in a diverse demographic of rural and urban youth, students, young agripreneurs, and community activists across every constituency. This comprehensive engagement guaranteed that the upcoming National Youth Climate Statement reflects actual local challenges, specifically mapping out community vulnerabilities to water scarcity, soil health, and extreme weather.

In terms of direct policy contribution, the insights and recommendations captured during these regional convenings are being synthesized directly into Eswatini's official Climate Youth Statement. This process ensures that the authentic perspective of the nation’s youth is integrated directly into mainstream national policies, as well as global UNFCCC and YOUNGO frameworks.

Beyond theoretical policy drafting, the sessions prioritized actionable local solutions to drive immediate impact. The dialogues successfully catalyzed practical, community-led efforts across the regions, prompting participants to initiate localized waste management, tree-planting drives, and climate-smart farming initiatives within their respective communities.

The regional engagements also served a vital role in capacity building and network growth for the attendees. Participants gained actionable training in climate adaptation, policy advocacy, and community leadership, while successfully expanding their professional and peer networks to sustain long-term collaborative advocacy.

Moving forward, these synthesized regional contributions will form the foundation of the National Youth Climate Statement. This document will be formally presented to government ministries, international development partners, and environmental stakeholders at the main LCOY conference to foster accountability and collaborative climate action.
