On Wednesday, 20 May, we attended the Southern Africa Nazarene University (SANU) Wellness Day.

The initiative was aimed at promoting health awareness and to improve access in basic healthcare services among students and staff. During the event, we engaged participants in discussions on HIV prevention methods, family planning, s*xually transmitted infections (STIs), and the range of services available at Sitsandziwe Clinic in Matsapha.

This was an opportunity to provide health education, answering questions, and encouraging attendees to make informed decisions about their s*xual and reproductive health.

A breakthrough HIV prevention medicine should not be a luxury.

US pharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences has announced plans to supply lenacapavir to up to three million people over three years in selected low- and middle-income countries through an agreement with the Global Fund and the United States Department of State. But this falls far short of global need.

Around 1.3 million people acquire HIV every year. Yet many countries with rising rates of HIV infections remain excluded from accessing the drug. These countries are not included in the Gilead agreement with the Global Fund, while some are even excluded from accessing the drug through generics when these eventually come onto the market.

“It is not enough for this groundbreaking medicine to only be available to people living in wealthy countries. To truly curb HIV transmission, lenacapavir must be affordable and accessible for vulnerable people across the world who are at the highest risk of contracting the virus.” - Dr Tom Ellman, director of MSF’s Southern Africa Medical Unit (SAMU).

For a year, Doctors Without Borders has tried to purchase lenacapavir directly from Gilead, but access remains blocked.
