The ongoing Karura forest scandal is deeply disturbing me.

Inspired by Wangari Maathai's principle of the power of one, keeping quiet is not an option.

That is why I am engaging my friend, fellow conservationist and ambassador of the 15 billion trees, Truphena Muthoni Hsc in trying to find a way forward.

I am doing what I can in my capacity. But two heads are better than one.

The leaders who draft the climate policies today that affect the youth in future will not live to face the climate change consequences!

We speak for the future generations!

🌿 When conservation meets cultural rights

A recent Human Rights-based assessment, as part of the Malawi National Ecosystem Assessment, highlights how conservation can be strengthened when grounded with human rights. The assessment uses Zolokere, a community on the edge of Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, Malawi, as a case study.

📌 Key takeaways:
• Local Indigenous and cultural practices have long supported sustainable stewardship of land and wildlife and deserve recognition in conservation planning.
• Cultural rights, including access to ancestral sites, are essential to dignity, identity, and community wellbeing.
• Strengthening participation, trust, and shared decision making between communities and reserve authorities can make biodiversity governance more equitable and effective.
This case demonstrates that true conservation success depends on respecting people’s rights, knowledge, and cultural heritage.
