In Aleppo, UNHCR welcomed a 🇪🇺 delegation, who visited Akburhan camp and a UNHCR‑supported community centre in the Al Ashrafieh neighbourhood.
During the visit, the delegation met with displaced families, returnees, and members of the host community. They participated in focused group discussions organized by UNHCR, providing an important space for people to share their experiences, concerns, and their most pressing needs.
In Akburhan camp, the delegation saw firsthand the legal support services implemented with the Syria Development Organization, the psychosocial support activities with Shafaq Organization, and visited the UNICEF‑supported school and the WHO‑supported medical point.

A Journey Home Ahead of Eid

After years of displacement, families from Afrin are beginning a long-awaited return to their places of origin.

Today, UNHCR facilitated the voluntary return of 160 displaced families from Qamishli to Afrin, ahead of Eid al-Adha. The convoy (51 trucks and 9 buses) brought families, who had been living in former school buildings, marking a significant step in their journey home.

This is the second such convoy organized from Qamishli to Afrin.

UNHCR provided transportation, protection services, and information on available assistance through community centres in Afrin. Many returnees continue to require support with shelter and access to basic services. UNHCR and partners are working through community centres, mobile teams, and outreach volunteers to help families re-establish their lives and strengthen local recovery. As families reunite with their communities ahead of Eid, efforts continue to support dignified returns and longer-term recovery across affected areas.

“Today we are here to work with the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management and the Commission of the Planning and Statistics to discuss the “No Camps, No Tents Vision”, of the government from the presidential degree 59 issued in March this year. We are here to have a shared understanding on what the vision “No Camps, No Tents” looks like, and to work on concrete ways, and how we can provide solutions for the one million displaced people who still live in camps in Syria. We are bringing together the UN agencies, the government, NGOs and many stakeholders to for this discussion today, and by the end of the day we hope to have some concrete ways that we can work together to find solutions in order to provide solutions in alignment with the government’s vision", Oliver Smith, UNHCR Syria

For years, families displaced from Afrin carried one hope above all others: to return home. This week, that hope began to take shape.

On Sunday, 10 May, 205 displaced families started the journey back from Qamishli to Afrin ahead of Eid al-Adha — hoping to celebrate the holiday in the homes, neighbourhoods, and communities they were forced to leave behind.

Many had spent years living in schools converted into collective shelters, waiting for the moment when return might finally become possible. Their departure also means classrooms can reopen in time for students to sit their final exams — another step toward normalcy for both returning families and the wider community.

Behind every bus leaving Qamishli is a story of endurance: parents determined to rebuild, children returning to places they barely remember, and families carrying both uncertainty and relief as they begin again.

UNHCR supported the returns with transportation, protection services, and information on available assistance through community centres in Afrin. Teams in Qamishli continue to support around 800 families still living in collective shelters who are also hoping to return soon.

Today, around 5,000 families from Afrin remain displaced, most in Qamishli — including approximately 3,000 living with host communities and nearly 2,000 in collective shelters.

“The courage of Syrian returnees offers a rare measure of hope. Syria’s friends must now move beyond promises and help families rebuild their lives with dignity,” said Andrew Harper.
During recent visits to Zabadani, Kafr Batna and Douma, Harper met Syrian families returning after years of displacement, many determined to rebuild despite immense hardship.
One mother of two told him simply: “We are used to challenges, but we want to keep going.”
Yet beneath that grit lies a far harsher reality. Families described damaged homes, scarce food supplies, inadequate shelter and limited access to healthcare. Children continue to carry the psychological weight of years marked by war and displacement. Others spoke of urgent needs for civil documentation, livelihoods and basic services — particularly women heading households alone.
Across much of , homes, schools and essential infrastructure remain deeply affected. While returns continue, recovery remains fragile. Sustained international support will be critical to ensure children can return to classrooms, families can access basic services, and communities can rebuild with stability and dignity.

A United Nations team, led by UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Nathalie Fustier and Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management Raed Al Saleh, conducted a field visit to the Hazano and Sarmada camps in rural Idleb. During the visit, the team met with families who have endured years of displacement.
The delegation listened to communities, assessed urgent needs, and discussed what it will take to move beyond temporary solutions.
Ending displacement cannot be aspirational, it must be actionable.
The government’s vision of No Tents, No Camps reflects a critical shift: from managing displacement to resolving it. Achieving this will require sustained investment in services, infrastructure, and livelihoods—so that returns are safe, voluntary, and dignified.
UNHCR remains committed to working with partners to support families not only to return, but to rebuild their futures with stability and hope.
