Supporting Families, Restoring Strength in Shlash

In the outskirts of Ar-Raqqa, hundreds of families in the Shlash informal settlement face harsh living conditions, yet their resilience never fades.

From January to April, DanChurchAid (DCA) with support from Danida has been helping children and families regain a sense of safety and hope through psychosocial support and protection activities.

In art and music sessions, children they once couldn’t put into words.
In , parents learn new ways to and support their children.
For those who need it most, individual case management ensures no one is left behind.

“I feel creative when I draw, it makes me feel like an artist,” says 13-year-old Fatima, smiling as he sketches his dreams.

Between January and April 2025, DCA’s work in Shlash reached over 1,300 people, including:

450 children through psychosocial support

520 adults through awareness sessions

55 people through individual case management

320 adolescents through art and music activities

In a place marked by hardship, every drawing, song, and smile is a sign of healing and a reminder that hope can grow even in the toughest conditions.

𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬, 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬: 𝟒𝟎 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐡𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭

In Informal Settlement in Ar-Raqqa, , 40 individuals are no longer waiting for opportunity: they’re building it.

Thanks to support from the Danish Government, DCA Syria launched a tailored TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) initiative to equip residents of Shlash Informal Settlement with the tools, skills, and confidence to earn a living right where they are.

Participants received business management, finance, and marketing training then chose paths that matched market needs:

Mobile phone maintenance
Detergent production
Tailoring
Pastry making
Agricultural spraying

“I gained a lot of skills, and now I'm working in this field spraying vegetable and corn fields around the settlement,” said Mohammad, from the agricultural spraying training.

“I benefited a lot from the training. Now I do maintenance on ICs, change screens, and repair parts I’d never even heard of before,” said Abd Al-Razaq, a graduate of the mobile phone maintenance training.

“I thank DCA. I learned so much, and now I’ve started a tailoring business from home,” shared Majida.

“I’m deeply grateful for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I support my family by producing and selling detergent to neighbours,” said Ameera.

What starts with a skill can lead to a livelihood and a future

The initiative is funded by the Danish Government and is part of the project:

"Enhancing the protection, resilience and dignity of communities affected by conflict in Northeast Syria (NES)."

بضعة سنتيمترات فقط قد تصنع الفرق بين الأمان والخوف.

كل شتاء، تواجه العائلات النازحة في فيضانات تحوّل خيامهم إلى برك من الطين.
هذا العام، عملت DCA مع المجتمعات المحلية على رفع وعزل أرضيات الخيام - تغييرات بسيطة لكنها دائمة، تبقي العائلات جافة، دافئة، وآمنة.

ومن خلال برنامج ، اكتسب أفراد المجتمع دخلًا ومهارات بناء جديدة يمكنهم الاستفادة منها طويلًا، مما يعزز قدرتهم على الاعتماد على الذات والصمود.

"الآن تبقى الأرض جافة، ولم نعد نرى الأفاعي أو العقارب أو الديدان تحت أسرّتنا."

A few centimetres can mean the difference between safety and fear.

Every winter, displaced families in face floods that turn their homes into pools of mud. This year, worked with local communities to raise and insulate tent floors - simple, lasting changes that keep families dry, warm, and safe.

Through cash-for-work, community members earned income while learning construction skills they can use long after the project ends - strengthening both their resilience and self-reliance.

A simple floor changed everything.

Clearing the Past, Cultivating the Future: Restoring Safe Livelihoods in Abu Jadi Village

After years of conflict and displacement, Mohammed - a farmer and a father of three - can finally farm his land in Abu Jadi, Ar-Raqqa countryside. His fields, once littered with explosive hazards, are now safe to farm again.

Through funding from UK International Development Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, DanChurchAid's Humanitarian Mine Action team conducted meticulous clearance operations - removing explosive remnants of war from farmlands and key infrastructure across .

This effort not only restored safety but also revived livelihoods for farmers who had long been cut off from their only source of income. Mohammed is now preparing to plant wheat and barley - crops that once sustained his family before the war.

“Life is starting to come back here,” he said. “The land is safe - and that means everything.”

Communities like Abu Jadi are regaining confidence, productivity, and hope - one cleared field at a time.

Building National Capacity in Mine Action

DanChurchAid (DCA) is proud to share that Jacob Payton, our Head of Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA) Operations in Syria recently completed the National Mine Action Standards (NMAS) Development Course at the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) in Spiez, Switzerland.

This specialized training strengthens DCA’s ongoing efforts to align with International Mine Action Standards (IMAS) and to support the development of context-appropriate NMAS frameworks across the world.

Through this learning opportunity, DCA reaffirms its commitment to supporting national authorities, partners, and communities in advancing safe, effective, and sustainable mine action operations across the country.

A sincere thank you to Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining – (GICHD) for facilitating this important capacity-strengthening initiative, and their tireless efforts towards a safer Syria for all.

Our partners RMCO, دان للإغاثة والتنمية - Dan For Relief And Development, منظمة أمل للإغاثة والتنمية Amal Organization for Relief and Development and منظمة ماري للتنمية - Mari Development joined us for a workshop to shape a common vision for a safer and more resilient Syria.

Recently, we gathered with our national partners for our annual Theory of Change workshop — a day of teamwork, reflection, and planning for the future of our work in Syria.

The conversations were inspiring. We explored how to better support communities recovering from conflict — from clearing land of explosive ordnance to helping families rebuild their lives and livelihoods.

One message came through clearly: change happens through partnership.
That’s why DCA Syria is deeply committed to localization — strengthening our partners and ensuring that local communities lead the way toward recovery and resilience.

Together, we’re working for a safer, stronger, and more hopeful Syria.
