Why was France interested in American independence?

After its defeat in the Seven Years’ War, France was searching for answers. Britain’s victory revealed something crucial: mainland North American colonies were a major source of imperial strength.

These colonies supplied food, timber, manpower, and naval bases that supported Britain’s dominance — especially in the Caribbean, the most economically valuable region of the 18th-century Atlantic world.

By supporting American independence, France could weaken this system. Detaching the colonies from Britain meant undermining its rival’s economic and military power, while potentially gaining a valuable partner in trade and supply.

The alliance with the United States was not only about ideology — it was a strategic effort to reshape the balance of power.

How did Abigail Adams become one of the sharpest political voices of her time?

Despite having no formal education, Abigail Adams developed her intellect through constant reading. Growing up in a minister’s household, she had access to books, newspapers, and political commentary, which shaped her understanding of the world.

As an adult, she managed the family farm, handled financial decisions, and invested independently — roles that were unusual for women in the 18th century.

Her insight extended into politics. Through her correspondence, she became one of John Adams’s most trusted advisors.
Abigail Adams’ influence reminds us that political power in the Revolutionary era was not limited to those holding office.

What did independence mean for someone who was still enslaved?

Why didn’t France immediately support the American Revolution?

Despite being Britain’s rival, France saw the Revolution as a risky gamble. Supporting a colonial rebellion could weaken Britain, but it could also fail, leaving France exposed after backing the losing side.

French officials also worried about the broader consequences. If revolutionary ideas spread, they could destabilize France’s own empire and economic system.
At the same time, some French thinkers—especially economic reformers, supported freer trade and saw opportunity in an independent United States.

In the end, France waited. Only once the American cause seemed viable did it commit to an alliance.

Was Abigail Adams writing only to her husband—or to history itself?

Much of Abigail Adams’ political voice appeared in private letters, shaped by a world where women were largely excluded from public discourse. Yet the Adams family carefully preserved their correspondence, fully aware that future generations might read it.

Today, the Adams Papers collection contains hundreds of thousands of pages, offering a rare window into her thinking.

Her letters blur the line between private and public writing. While addressed to John Adams, they also reflect an awareness that her words could endure—and influence how the Revolution would be remembered.

Abigail Adams was not only participating in her present, but also shaping her historical legacy.

Declaring independence wasn’t enough.

In 1776, the United States could call itself a nation — but without recognition from other powers, it meant almost nothing. Independence only becomes real when other states accept it.

That’s why the Declaration of Independence wasn’t just aimed at Britain. It was a signal to the world: the United States wanted to be treated as an equal among nations.

France was the first to recognize American independence — largely for strategic reasons.

But the Dutch Republic followed for something different: ideology. They supported the American cause not just to weaken Britain, but because they believed in it.

That recognition helped transform a rebellion into a legitimate nation.

Independence isn’t declared — it’s acknowledged.

What did the Declaration of Independence actually change?

It did more than announce a break from Britain — it transformed the colonies into states capable of acting on the global stage. Independence meant the United States could form alliances, negotiate treaties, and establish its own trade relationships.

This shift was essential. From the beginning, American leaders understood they could not win the war alone. Securing support from France, Britain’s rival, became a strategic necessity.

But the implications went beyond military aid. Independence also opened new commercial possibilities, allowing the United States to trade freely rather than operate within Britain’s restrictive imperial system.

The Declaration, therefore, was not only political — it was diplomatic and economic.

What did Abigail Adams really mean when she wrote to her husband during the Revolution?

In a private letter to John Adams, Abigail expressed a principle that would echo far beyond her time: laws should not be written for people who have no voice in them. While her words were not intended for public circulation, they reflected a serious political idea at the heart of the revolutionary moment.

Her statement aligned with broader debates about representation that shaped the Declaration of Independence itself.

Though excluded from formal political power, Abigail Adams articulated a vision that challenged those limits— one that would resonate in later movements for rights and equality.

O). Im Anschluss findet eine Diskussion mit dem Filmemacher Jerry Fischer und dem Migrationshistoriker der jüdischen Geschichte Björn Siegel statt.

Die Veranstaltung findet auf Englisch statt.

The film “Henny: A Legacy of Hope” tells the story of Holocaust survivor Henny Simon and her message of remembrance and responsibility.

Henny was born in Hanover, survived the Holocaust, and later emigrated to the United States. For decades, she remained silent about her experiences. It was only in her later years, in the face of rising anti-Semitism, Holocaust denial, and hatred, that she decided to speak out.

In conversations with students and adults, she succeeded in connecting her personal story with current social developments, thereby raising awareness of the fight against intolerance, historical revisionism, and human rights violations. Her legacy lives on through the people she has reached and through this film.

In cooperation with the Institute for the History of German Jews and the Jewish Film Club Hamburg, we will screen the documentary “Henny: A Legacy of Hope” (USA 2024, 80 min., English) on June 2, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. at the Abaton. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker Jerry Fischer and Björn Siegel, a historian specializing in Jewish migration history.

The event will be held in English.
