How we started our Suchitoto Circle
In 2011 our little club SuchiBirders was just getting started, the idea of starting an annual CBC came up and with the help of some Audubon members one of whom was living in Suchitoto I started the plan and logistics for our first trail CBC with a date of Jan 5th 2013. Biologist Melvin Bonilla and Jeniffer Abrego helped me with the technical circle description and I started working out the logistics. Founders Frank Cummings, Benjamin Riviera and I footed the bill for most of the cash expenses but we also had some local support from Guazapa Tours and Suchitoto Outifitters with transportation. Access to some areas was opened free of charge at the Cinquera eco-park, Guazapa Tours, the Santa Anita Coop. and Hacienda Los Nacimientos. We used this model for the next 3 CBCs in 2013, 2014 and 2016 which allowed us to invite an average of 6 local guides from around the country paying all their expenses the exception of their transportation to get to Suchitoto. In 2014 and 2016, we asked participants who could to offer what they could to help us offset the cost for the local guides. All working adults were asked gto pay their own expenses which were kept to a minimum to allow all who wanted to be able to participate. In late 2014, I had some health issues and no one else was able to handle the logistics so we decided to cancel the CBC that year. Our CBC resumed normally in 2016. In CBCs in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017, I prepared and shared all data and financial reports for each of the CBCs all participants. It was not possible to provide all financial support or expenses in 2017 as founding member Benjamin Rivera sought out support and financial assistance, which covered the costs for some participants but no report of what was received or spent was made available. In 2018 because of difference of opinions about who should be invited, the purpose a CBC and asking for financial support, I decided to let Benjamin organize the count as he wished. Again financial support was received for the Suchitoto circle as well as two new circles in other parts of the country but no report was provided as to where how much or what expenses were paid in this count, only official CBC data which I uploaded to the Audubon CBC site to officially close the count year.
In this years and future CBCs I hope to return to our original model, keeping expenses to a minimum, making sure the CBC be open to all who wish to participate and financing expenses for students and local guides form low income families.
