Harvesting in Spanish

Harvesting in Spanish Harvesting In Spanish (HIS) is a U.S. non-profit mission supporting a children's home, Christian schools and medical/dental clinic in El Salvador.

In 1976, Don and Rose Ann Benner, who lived in Colorado, arrived in Costa Rica to study Spanish for a year. They went to El Salvador in 1977, just as the civil war began in the country, to establish a literature ministry. A few years later, the Benners noticed a need to help many homeless and abandoned children, many of whom had lost their parents in the war. In 1979, they began to work in Christian schools and raised scholarships for the education of needy children. In 1980, Harvesting In Spanish (HIS) was granted a non-profit corporate status in the US by the state of Colorado, and tax exemption by the IRS as a publicly supported 501(c) 3 non-profit charity.

50 years of showing up for kids, families, and our community.

Every class, activity, and opportunity you see today is part of a much bigger story, and there is still so much ahead.

Your support helps us keep showing up.

Made by hand and with plenty of concentration.

Hands-on projects like jewelry making give our students space to slow down, create, and be proud of something they made themselves.

Art class is about more than what ends up on the page.

It’s patience, problem-solving, self-expression, and learning to keep going when something doesn’t turn out exactly as planned.

Some of the best learning happens when we do it together.

Music gives our students a chance to build confidence, practice patience, and have a little fun along the way.

A little piece of El Salvador, brought to life through art. 🇸🇻

Our students are learning about culture while putting their own creativity into every brushstroke.

And now you know a new fun fact about El Salvador, too!

How many kids today can say they know how to sew?

Our boys and girls, ages 8 to 13, are learning a skill that feels simple, but can mean so much. With beads, needles, and string, they are practicing patience, focus, creativity, and a little problem-solving when those knots show up.

There is plenty of laughter along the way, but the best part is watching their faces light up when their first try finally comes together. 🧵

Never underestimate the power of simple household items. Sometimes, they can help create confidence that lasts.

We didn't come for a season. Shalom is a long-term promise to the kids who live here.

We promise them that we will keep showing up, keep loving them well, and still be standing beside them years from now.

That steadiness is the whole point.

There's something powerful about hearing children read together.

Our students are gathering in small groups, reading aloud, learning from each other, and gaining confidence with every page. For many of them, reading has been a struggle. This is what turning that corner looks like.

Thank you to reading specialist Bob Stevens and the HIS community who stocked our shelves.

Help us keep the shelves full

Proud doesn't begin to cover it.

When Julio, one of our own, graduated from aviation mechanic school here in El Salvador, we felt an overwhelming sense of joy.

He stayed committed when it wasn't easy, and now a whole career is opening up in front of him. Watching a child you've walked beside grow into the person he was made to be?

That's the whole reason Shalom exists. Cheering you on, Julio.

Changing a child’s life doesn't require a grand gesture.

Sometimes, it just requires the patience to sit down, look a child in the eyes, and say, "I am here for you."

When volunteers show up at Shalom Home, they give our children the tools, confidence, and vision to realize that their current circumstances do not have to be their permanent reality.

We are deeply grateful for every volunteer who has stepped through our doors and left a lasting legacy of love.
