Compartimos artículo de investigación realizado por Mongabay Latam, sobre los graves impactos ambientales en la cuenca transfronteriza del Rio Lempa, ubicada en la región Trifinio compartida por Guatemala, Honduras y El Salvador, y una parte de la cual en 2011 fue declarada Reserva de Biósfera Transfronteriza Fraternidad (RBTF), la Joya de las Américas, y de igual forma es el territorio del Corredor Biológico Trinacional Montecristo (CBTM). GAIA EL SALVADOR como parte del equipo de apoyo en este proceso de investigación, agradece a las redes y organizaciones de la base local triancional, su participación en esta importante investigación.
“El río Lempa es la columna vertebral de El Salvador, por eso es un problema de seguridad nacional”, dijo Medrano.
“El problema que tenemos es grave”, dijo Josefina Serna Aguirre, miembro de la Red de Mujeres de la Reserva de la Biosfera Transfronteriza Trifinio Fraternidad, que lucha por proteger la parte de la reserva que corresponde a El Salvador. “Esta deforestación masiva es triste porque nos vamos a quedar sin recursos naturales, especialmente el más importante: el agua”.
“Con la ayuda de la Asociación Gaia, los residentes han presentado numerosas denuncias sobre la contaminación causada por la eliminación inadecuada de residuos, el uso de agroquímicos y el vertido de aguas residuales en el lago. También han registrado expropiaciones ilegales de tierras en islas del lago, así como deforestación ilegal y extracción de pasto en zonas inundables.”

We share an investigative article by Mogabay on the serious environmental impacts of the Lempa River transboundary basin, located in the Trifinio region shared by Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. Part of this basin was declared the Fraternidad Transboundary Biosphere Reserve (RBTF) in 2011, the Jewel of the Americas, and is also part of the Montecristo Trinational Biological Corridor (CBTM). GAIA, as part of the support team for this research process, thanks the local trinational networks and organizations for their participation in this important research.
“The Lempa River is the backbone of El Salvador, which is why it’s such a national security issue,” Medrano said.
“The problem we have is a serious one,” said Josefina Serna Aguirre, a member of the Trifinio Fraternidad Transboundary Biosphere Reserve Women’s Network fighting to protect El Salvador’s part of the reserve. “This massive deforestation is sad because we’re going to be left without natural resources, especially the most important resource: water.”
“With the help of the Gaia Association, residents have filed numerous complaints about pollution from improper waste disposal, agrochemical use and sewage discharge in the lake. They’ve also recorded illegal land seizures on islands in the lake as well as illegal deforestation and grass extraction in flood zones.”
