Online spaces are supposed to give voice and power to women and girls, yet in South Sudan, it has gradually become a hostile hub. Technology-facilitated violence against women and young women has reached an unprecedented level. Many, particularly young women, are falling victim to online bullying, harassment, intimidation, body shaming and defamation, which has led to loss of self-confidence, fear of online engagement, reluctance to express their opinions and the worst mental health challenges. Regrettably, some of these forms of harassment and intimidation extend beyond the digital sphere, escalating into offline physical attacks, and in tragic instances, su***de or even homicide.
As we commence this year's 16 Days of Activism, which focuses on eradicating digital violence against all women and girls, I strongly encourage young women and, in particular, young feminists to :
โข Never feel ashamed of the crucial contributions you are making. Continue your valuable work in advocating for women's rights with confidence. We are together in this,
โข Do not let negative comments restrict your online engagement, maintain your online presence and share your thoughts and opinions.
โข Preserve your confidence to speak up for yourselves and your fellow women,
โข Reach out to trusted individuals for help and support if you experience harassment, either online or offline. We are here to offer our assistance.
โข Be discerning about the individuals and content you engage with online, as some information may be misleading.
Let us all join the UNiTE campaign and take action to stop digital abuse against women and girls.
