HUMANITARIAN ALERT: WORSENING WATER CRISIS IN TONJO BOMA AND OTHER RESIDENCE IN WULU COUNTY, LAKES STATE.

The humanitarian situation in TonjO Boma and other part of Wulu County, Lakes State is worsening.

The only borehole serving the entire Boma has broken down, leaving communities in a desperate situation. There has been no rainfall in the area, making the borehole the sole source of safe drinking water for people and livestock.

The population has now overgrown the capacity of the single water point, and with its breakdown, women and children are forced to walk long distances in search of unsafe water from seasonal ponds.

We are appealing to Wulu County Authorities,Lakes State Ministry of Water and Irrigation,Humanitarian Partners and WASH Cluster and Well-wishers to restore the hope for the population in Wulu and other part in Lakes.

To urgently intervene to rehabilitate the borehole and consider drilling an additional water point to meet the growing population.

Location:Tonjio Boma, Hai Bahr gel in Wulu Town,Malechi Village,Doteku and Makundi payam, Wulu County, Lakes State Affected Population Entire solely depend on rain water since the available barholes are broken down

Lakes State has pledged full support for the PlayMatters education project. The commitment was made during its official launch at Hill View Hotel in Rumbek on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. The project will target 45 schools in total - 31 in Rumbek East and 14 in Yirol West.

Speaking at the launch, the State Minister of General Education and Instruction, Gabriel Maluach Yak, said the ministry will work with county education departments, communities and partners to ensure success.

He assured the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and the LEGO Foundation of the government's commitment. He said the project will create a better learning environment for teachers and learners and stressed that its plans must be turned into action.

The PlayMatters Team Leader, Elfirida Japheth Twalihi, said PlayMatters is a four-year program funded by the LEGO Foundation through UBS Foundation and implemented by IRC, Plan International and War Child Alliance.

It started in July 2026 and will run until June 2030 across seven states, targeting about 160,000 children. In Lakes State, it will reach over 17,000 learners in 45 schools and support teachers and school leaders through mentorship.

Local education directors also welcomed the project. Rumbek East Director Isaac Magual John said it will help teachers move from traditional methods to child-centered learning.

Yirol West Director Andrew Wau Maker raised challenges facing schools, including lack of sanitary supplies for girls causing them to miss school, and climate issues like drought and flooding, calling for more support and early preparedness.
