With support from the Health Sector Transformation Project (HSTP) funding, managed by the World Bank, WHO - Republic of South Sudan has delivered blood bank refrigerators to Wau and Aweil State Hospitals, along with solar panels to Aweil Teaching Hospital.

This support improves blood storage capacity and ensures reliable power for critical health services, ultimately improving patient care and saving lives.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to equip 13 health facilities across South Sudan with essential infrastructure and equipment.

Since October 2025, a suspected measles outbreak affected children across Greater Tonj, with Tonj South hardest hit.

This outbreak was laboratory confirmed in March 2026. Cumulatively, a total of 531 suspected cases and 12 deaths were recorded. Only one of the affected children was vaccinated. This means that 99% of the affected children had missed their routine vaccinations due to disrupted outreach services, compounded by long distances to health facilities, flooding, insecurity, poor road conditions, and limited funding.

In response, Ministry of Health - Republic of South Sudan, with support from WHO - Republic of South Sudan and partners including Médecins Sans Frontières / MSF, Amref Health Africa, South Sudan Red Cross, and In-Deep and Truth Ministries (IDAT), conducted a reactive measles vaccination campaign from 2 to 9 May 2026. In just eight days, over 28,000 children were vaccinated, achieving 97% administrative coverage across all five payams, including hard-to-reach areas. In turn, no new suspected or confirmed measles case has been detected for now 6 epidemiological weeks, confirming interruption of transmission.

Thanks to funding from EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, this achievement highlights the power of coordinated action in protecting children and preventing further spread of vaccine-preventable diseases. Continued investment in routine immunization and outreach services remains critical to safeguard every child.

Strengthening lifesaving blood services across South Sudan remains a critical priority for improving healthcare.

The Ministry of Health, through the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS), with support from World Health Organization (WHO) and funding from the Health Sector Transformation Project (HSTP) managed by the World Bank Group, continues to expand access to safe and reliable blood transfusion services.

Following the installation of 13 blood bank refrigerators in selected health facilities, a Training of Trainers was conducted this week to equip 14 NBTS experts with the skills needed to roll out integrated training on blood management and transfusion services across key catchment areas.

This effort marks an important step toward ensuring timely access to safe blood for patients in need.

The to***co and ni****ne industry continues to target young people with products such as vapes and ni****ne pouches, often marketed as harmless and trendy.

The adolescent brain is still developing and adapts rapidly to ni****ne. Even low levels of exposure can lead to strong dependence, impair brain development and increase the risk of long-term or lifelong addiction.

Quit to***co and live longer and healthier.
