Meet Samuel, a community nutrition volunteer in Aweil, South Sudan, who is helping save lives one child at a time. 💙

Every day, Samuel visits families, screens children for malnutrition, counsels caregivers on infant and young child feeding, and connects vulnerable children with the treatment they need. His dedication is helping children not only survive but thrive.

Community volunteers like Samuel are the backbone of nutrition services, bringing life-saving support closer to families and ensuring no child is left behind.

Did you know? Educating girls is a powerful investment in a country’s health, peace, economy and prosperity of future generations. UNICEF is honoured to be a part of the Campaign, with the Ministry of General Education and Instruction, Republic of South Sudan, the African Union and UNESCO South Sudan.

The campaign aims to strengthen policies, mobilize communities and partners, prevent child marriage, and support out-of-school girls to return to learning and stay in school. It also seeks to build a more resilient education system that keeps children learning during and beyond emergencies.

Together, let’s turn these commitments into action and ensure every girl has the opportunity to learn, thrive and reach her full potential.

On International Youth Day, UNICEF South Sudan joined the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, the Ministry of General Education and Instruction, GREDO and partners in Juba to celebrate adolescents and young people graduating with certificates in various vocational and other fields.

Across South Sudan, conflict, displacement, poverty and interruptions to education continue to limit opportunities for many young people. Yet every young person deserves the chance to learn, develop skills and build a brighter future.

Through UNICEF-supported programmes, including Transformative Youth Centres, adolescents and youth access vocational training, life skills, mentorship and safe spaces that provide positive alternatives to violence, gang involvement, exploitation and other protection risks.

Every day, more refugees and returnees cross into South Sudan through Renk, fleeing the conflict in Sudan. Many arrive through the Eastern Corridor to Chemedi exhausted and with nothing. One of their most urgent needs is safe water and sanitation.

UNICEF and partners are working to expand access to clean water and basic sanitation at Chemedi, helping prevent the spread of disease among families who have already lost so much. Thanks to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, the British Embassy Juba

In Malakal, UNICEF, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, the British Embassy Juba and partners witnessed first-hand how UK-supported programmes are changing lives.

Through SSHARP funding, including RAF and resilient primary health care initiatives, vulnerable children and families are gaining access to critical health, nutrition, protection, and humanitarian services, helping communities build a stronger, more resilient future.

An interrupted future, hope against the odds, a dream restored for two boys

At just 15 years old, Lotol refused to let fear define his future. Despite being forcibly recruited into the military, he held on to one dream: returning to school and continuing his education. Today, his story is a reminder that every child deserves protection, learning, and the chance to grow up in peace.

Maachar, was focused on his studies and looking forward to advancing in school. But in 2026, that future was suddenly disrupted when he was forcibly recruited into the military.
Every child has the right to learn, be protected, and pursue their dreams. Maachar's journey highlights the importance of giving children affected by conflict a second chance to rebuild their lives.

Thank you to Norway for providing generous support for conflict-affected children in South Sudan. Norway’s support is helping UNICEF strengthen child protection services for the most vulnerable children in South Sudan.
