Western Bahr El Ghazal state, like other states of South Sudan has experienced violence conflict since 2012 when the government decided to relocate Wau County headquarter to Bagari Payam. The war was catalyzed by the power struggle within the ruling party(SPLM) in 2013.
These wars and conflict left the people of Wau in distress and potential traumatic experiences.
For this reasons, solidarity Ministries Africa for Reconciliation and Development (SMARD) in Partnership with UNDP-funded Peace and Community Cohesion (PaCC) III project, supported psychosocial support activity that aims to provide psychosocial and mental health services to the displaced persons, returnees, refugees and host community in Western Bahr El Ghazal.
As part of implementation strategies, SMARD held a 1-day inclusive consultative workshop with local leaders, chiefs, women, youth, CSOs, FBOs and IDPs on 22nd November, 2024 at ATM Hotel, Wau, South Sudan .
The purpose for the consultation is to inclusively identify and form 30 Psychosocial Community Volunteers (PCVs) in Wau County (Bagari Jedid, Bazia Jedid, Baselia, Wau North, Wau South Payams and The camps.)
The local leaders successfully identified 30 individuals after attentively listened to the presentation on to the selection process/criteria/requirements/qualifications and formed them into Psychosocial Community Volunteers (PCVs) team in Wau.
These PCVs will undergo 5-day Trauma awareness and psychosocial support training and thereafter, will be commissioned to deliver counseling sessions, facilitate trauma awareness and psychosocial first aid trainings in the communities and refer cases to other services providers.
