Our Story
Beginning October 2018, Health Pooled Fund (HPF) South Sudan embarked on a 5-year project (HPF3) running through 2023. In partnership with the South Sudan ministry of health (MoH) and several implementing partners, HPF supports the provision of primary healthcare services and delivering of medicines across eight States of South Sudan. HPF is funded by the Government of Canada, United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID), United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Swedish International Development and Cooperation Agency (SIDA).
South Sudan became the world’s newest nation when it attained independence from Sudan in July 2011. A chronically weak health system has resulted in some of the world’s worst health indicators. While some progress has been made, the maternal mortality ratio remains among the world’s highest at an estimated 789 deaths per 100,000 live births.
Furthermore, almost half the population earns less than a dollar a day while up to 83 percent reside in rural areas. There is a limited road network making logistics and transportation very difficult. Combined these factors present a formidable challenge to providing health services, developing health systems and supporting community engagement.
Against this background, the Health Pooled Fund (HPF) is transforming the lives of millions of people in South Sudan by providing access to quality health services. HPF aims to lay the foundations for South Sudan’s Ministry of Heath to provide quality healthcare for its own people in a future free from dependency on foreign aid. The programme has a strong focus on transforming maternal and child health in South Sudan.
