UNITY - The mobile court sitting in Leer, Southern Unity State, has handed down strong sentences to two men in separate cases of r**e and murder.
In one case, a South Sudanese humanitarian worker, was found guilty of ra**ng a 14-year-old girl in Rubkuay, Mayiendit County. He was sentenced to eight years in prison with hard labour and ordered to pay compensation, including cattle, damages and medical expenses.
In a separate ruling, a 31-year-old man was convicted of murder and robbery linked to a 2017 attack in Paday Village, where three people were killed. The court ordered him to pay 153 cows in compensation to the victims’ families.
The court is part of a mobile justice initiative deployed by the national judiciary and the Ministry of Justice, with support from UNMISS, to improve access to justice in conflict-affected areas.
The current session began on March 23 and is expected to conclude on April 16.
