🚓: Empowering Rural Mobility in South Sudan

Today, AVSI celebrated the pivotal role bicycles play in strengthening agricultural productivity and rural mobility for farmers in South Sudan. In partnership with , AVSI through the CDRD project, handed over 10 bicycles last year to community-based facilitators in Yei and Magwi, empowering them to better support smallholder farmers in improving food security and livelihoods.

By enhancing agricultural logistics and easing transportation challenges, this support aims to increase family incomes of local farmers, bolster food security, and stimulate local economic growth.

For AVSI, It demonstrates the power of innovative, context-appropriate solutions to create lasting impact in rural communities—improving livelihoods and supporting sustainable agricultural value chains.

A special thanks to EU in South Sudan, Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ), and Netherlands Embassy in South Sudan for making this possible!

Recently, AVSI organized a one-day parental awareness session at Torit Day Secondary School as part of the . The event brought together 36 parents and caregivers; all committed to strengthening support for children’s education.

The session focused on key themes, including the importance of regular school attendance, positive parenting, discipline, and the fostering of safe and supportive learning environments at home. Parents were encouraged to play an active role in monitoring their children’s academic progress and motivating them to stay engaged in school.

So far, AVSI has supported over 390 children across Torit, Magwi, and Ikotos counties by paying school fees, providing uniforms, and ensuring access to safe, inclusive learning spaces.

⚽ !

Today, AVSI recognizes the power of football, empowering young people to build confidence, teach resilience, and develop teamwork and leadership skills, while fostering peace and social inclusion to break down socio-economic barriers.

With support from Netherlands Embassy in South Sudan, students from 18 schools across Eastern Equatoria and Lakes States received over 10 footballs to promote peace-building, inclusion, and resilience in schools and communities.

For these young players, football is becoming more than just a game. It is a way to come together in an equal field and celebrate core values—a chance to spread smiles and create positive change within the community.

Because it’s an opportunity to support scalable, community-driven impact where sports meet sustainability.

Together, we play for change.

When young people are empowered, communities grow!

That's why, in Kapoeta North, AVSI is equipping learners with vital life skills, self-confidence, and advocacy tools to reshape their communities.

Through the ā€ model, girls and boys come together to discuss their evolving views on gender and society and to find solutions for their communities.

This approach actively involves boys and leverages peer-to-peer mobilization. Through open discussions on gender equality and supporting girls’ rights, they gained the knowledge and skills needed to effect positive change in their own lives, families, and communities.

Supported by Education Cannot Wait, and the Ministry of General Education and Instruction, Republic of South Sudan, the initiative targeted 200 adolescent boys and girls. It was carried out at two primary schools (Riwoto and St. Mary's P/S) and one secondary school (Tim Galvin SS).

When education on gender equality is combined with leadership development, children are empowered to spark positive health, social, and economic changes in their communities.

šŸWorld !

In South Sudan, 235 beekeepers—114 women and 121 men—from Wulu, Ikotos, and Magwi are transforming their livelihoods through sustainable beekeeping and modern honey production.

This is after they received comprehensive training on technical bee management, seasonal planning, disease control, honey extraction, and value addition by AVSI, through RURALSS project supported by the Netherlands Embassy in South Sudan.

Following these capacity-building sessions, participants received 185 modern beehives and essential equipment, empowering them to immediately apply their new skills and increase household incomes while supporting climate-resilient agriculture.

With the distribution of modern beehives and harvesting gear, these farmers across Eastern Equatoria and Lakes States adopted honey farming as a reliable and sustainable source of income. This initiative not only boosts individual livelihoods but also expands agribusiness opportunities, helping to build a more resilient agricultural sector in the region.

Early this month, AVSI team, led by the Chief of Party for the project, engaged with Millers and Agro Processing to facilitate market linkages that would connect smallholder farmers with private sector actors.

The engagement will enable more than 3,000 farmers supported by the project to move from subsistence to commercial farming by securing better prices, improving post-harvest management practices, and accessing quality inputs.

It also creates sustainable, demand-driven chains that increase rural incomes, improve product quality, and strengthen food security through reliable, high-volume partnerships.

With thanks to the Netherlands Embassy in South Sudan, this collaborative approach helps address challenges such as power imbalances in the supply chain, financial barriers and market exclusion, while promoting sustainable growth in agriculture through better market coordination and logistics.

Because! When farmers and companies invest together, rural economies grow faster and more sustainably.
