What is an Accelerated Learning Programme, and why does it matter in Kapoeta, ?

An Accelerated Learning Programme helps children and young people who have dropped out of school return to education and catch up on the years of learning they have missed.

In , this initiative, implemented by AVSI in partnership with Save the Children South Sudan supported by the Ministry of General Education and Instruction, Republic of South Sudan with funding from Education Cannot Wait through the Multy-Year Resilience Program, is giving students like Mary a second chance to learn, grow, and build a brighter future.

So far, over 5000 learners have returned to the classroom through the programme, taking an important step towards completing their education and achieving their aspirations.

Good seeds can change a harvest, and a harvest can change a family's future.

AVSI has provided maize and Red Beauty groundnut seeds to 19 farmers' groups in Yei River County to multiply and produce more quality seeds for their communities. Seven groups received groundnut seeds, while 12 groups received maize seeds.

By producing quality seeds locally, farmers will have better access to planting materials, grow more food, increase their incomes, and help strengthen across their communities.

Across Eastern Equatoria and Lakes State, more than 4,500 farmers are strengthening their skills through supported by the Netherlands Embassy in South Sudan

Rather than learning in a classroom, farmers meet regularly in their own fields to observe, experiment, and test improved farming practices together: from planting and weeding to harvesting.

This practical, peer-to-peer approach helps them find solutions that work in their local context and confidently apply them on their own farms.

The results go beyond higher agricultural skills. Farmers are improving food production, growing more nutritious crops for their families, increasing their resilience to climate challenges, and generating additional income by selling surplus produce.

With more than 1,000 Farmer Field School sessions held across Torit, Magwi, Ikotos, Wulu, and Cueibet, communities are cultivating knowledge that leads to lasting change.

Great projects are built by empowered teams!

Recently, AVSI staff working under the RURALSS project in Torit received technical support and training for continuous growth.

Led by Chief of Party Mrs. Felly Acan, the 2 days staff training which focused on Gender in Value Chains, Gender and Climate Change, and Gender-Sensitive Monitoring & Evaluation, aims for a more inclusive program outcomes for sustainability.

The second phase involved providing technical support to the project team, addressing project interventions across all thematic areas. During this phase, AVSI engaged with a variety of stakeholders, including farmer groups, cooperatives, farmer group clusters, and schools.

These activities aim to strengthen staff capacity, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to carry out their responsibilities effectively and ensure that interventions are both inclusive and impactful.

Thanks to the Netherlands Embassy in South Sudan, AVSI is removing roadblocks and providing the team with the tools they need to ensure communities thrive. 💪📈

In Yei and Magwi, over 60 farmer groups are receiving training on making and the use energy-efficient cook-stoves, equipping local women with the skills and knowledge to produce fuel-efficient stoves. This initiative supports rural development, protects the environment by reducing emissions, and improves the health and well-being of families and communities.

A key advantage of these stoves is that they are constructed using locally sourced materials such as clay, anthill soil, and sand. As more women adopt these co-friendly stoves over traditional cooking methods, they report lower household costs and a reduced environmental impact.

Previously, community-based facilitators were also trained in this model, enabling effective scaling of the initiative in agricultural communities across Magwi and Yei Counties.

Implemented under the project, the initiative not only enhances income-generating opportunities but also reduces the risks faced by women and girls during frequent firewood collection, which often exposes them to various gender-based violence and protection incidents.

At AVSI, meaningful change starts by being present in the communities we serve — listening to people’s experiences, understanding their priorities, and learning from their perspectives.

During a recent field visit to Wulu, Lakes State, the AVSI team met with project participants, community leaders, and local staff to hear their feedback, discuss ongoing challenges, and better understand how our programmes can continue to respond to local needs.

The visit brought together AVSI Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa, Mr. Andrea Bianchessi, Country Representative Mr. Loku Peter, and project Chief of Party Mrs. Felly Acan, alongside colleagues working every day on the ground.

Through regular engagement with communities, AVSI strengthens its commitment to designing and implementing programmes that are relevant and sustainable.

On , AVSI celebrates the power of skills training to create new opportunities for young people in South Sudan.

Through its partnership with the Ireneo Dud Vocational Training Center in Bahrgel, Lakes State, AVSI supports young people to gain practical skills that can help them access employment and build a more sustainable future.

So far, the initiative has:
✅ Trained instructors and teachers in technical and academic subjects, including masonry, carpentry, tailoring, and catering.
✅ Supported the first cohort of 42 graduates with start-up kits to begin their professional journey.
✅ Strengthened school leadership through the involvement of parents, teachers, and community representatives.

With the support of CEI - Conferenza Episcopale Italiana, AVSI is helping address youth unemployment by equipping 164 young people with skills that respond to local job market needs.

Investing in skills means investing in the future of young people and their communities.

In Magwi County, AVSI conducted refresher training for 24 poultry farmers (20 women and 4 men) in Palwar and Lobone Payams, strengthening their skills in poultry management and piggery. The training followed by the stocking of pullets, supporting farmers in expanding their production.

To help the group move forward, members also received start-up capital to purchase materials for roofing their poultry houses. Through a cost-sharing approach, farmers contributed by constructing the structures themselves, while AVSI’s support covered the roofing phase.

With the support of Netherlands Embassy in South Sudan, AVSI continues to strengthen smallholder farmers’ capacities, helping them build sustainable livelihoods, increase income opportunities, and improve food security for their families and communities.

In , smallholder farmers are facing increasingly difficult growing conditions driven by climate change, making it harder to grow food and sustain livelihood

Through AVSI’s support, rural farmers in Eastern Equatoria and Lakes States are shifting from basic survival to thriving businesses. With targeted support, local growers are escaping poverty through hands-on education, financial tools, and strong community groups. This is because farmers are promoting composting and other climate-smart farming techniques to improve their crop yields.

Thanks to the Netherlands Embassy in South Sudan, over 4,000 farmers across five counties have received hands-on training through RURALSS project. This training equips them with the skills needed to build healthier soils, cultivate stronger crops, and enhance their resilience to climate change.
