Aweil Centre County Faces Rising Crime as Only Police Vehicle Breaks Down

Aweil Centre County in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State is facing a rise in violent crime after its only police operational vehicle broke down, crippling law enforcement response, the Deputy Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) reports. The vehicle is out of service due to damaged tyres, leaving officers unable to respond effectively across the county’s wide area.

This situation is critical because Aweil Centre County spans seven payams and remote sub-payams, making transportation essential for policing. Without a functioning vehicle, authorities warn that crime prevention, suspect arrests, and emergency response are severely weakened, increasing risks to civilians.

Recent reports confirm at least five murder cases, along with another fatal incident involving a man killed by a falling tree in January in Gumuthdo forest. Other cases include a killing in Umor Payam (February), two men murdered in Laffa under Nyanleth Payam (March), and several April incidents: a woman killed in Gierchok (Bar-Mayen Payam), a man stabbed in Apuok (Aroyo Payam), and a 12-year-old child killed by an unknown attacker in Hai Mathar (Awada Payam).

The affected areas include Aroyo, Bar-Mayen, Awada, Nyanleth, Chel South, Umar/Achana, Auluic, and Longurkach sub-payam, where limited police mobility continues to hinder security operations.

The Aweil Center Youth Association extends its deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family of Judge Sultan Gomo Wol, who passed away today at Aweil Civil Hospital following a brief illness.

Judge Gomo Wol was a distinguished and revered jurist, widely respected throughout Northern Bahr el Ghazal for his wisdom, humility, and unwavering commitment to justice. He was not only a guardian of the law but also a beloved leader known for his kindness and integrity.

His remarkable legacy and service to our people will be remembered for generations to come.

May the Almighty Father grant his soul eternal rest, and may He provide comfort and strength to his family during this difficult time.

📢 CALL FOR TVET VOCATIONAL TRAINING – REPORTING NOTICE

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), with funding support from UNHCR, has successfully organized TVET vocational training opportunities for refugees and youth from the host community.

All shortlisted candidates are hereby requested to report to Don Bosco Institute, Wau, on Monday, 9th March 2026 to begin the training program.

This initiative aims to equip young people with practical vocational skills that will support self-reliance, employment opportunities, and community development.

All selected candidates are encouraged to report on time and come prepared to start the training.

A Question to All Citizens of Aweil Centre County.

Our county is blessed with capable people, natural resources, and a strong community spirit. Yet when we look around, we still see that Aweil Centre County appears to lag behind in development compared to other counties in Northern Bahr el-Ghazal State. Roads remain poor, access to clean water and healthcare is limited, and many essential services are still lacking.

So the question is:

Why does Aweil Centre County continue to lag behind in development among the four counties of Northern Bahr el-Ghazal State?

Is it due to lack of unity among our leaders and citizens?

Is it a problem of leadership and accountability?

Is it because we have not yet fully used the human resources and potential that exist within our community?

Or is it because we have not come together with one common vision for progress?

This question is not meant to blame anyone, but to encourage honest reflection among all of us: leaders, youth, elders, women, professionals, and politicians. Development begins when a community asks itself difficult questions and works together to find solutions.

The future of Aweil Centre County depends on our collective commitment, unity, and determination to build a better society for the next generation.
