“We are Girls and Not Wives”, were some of the messages shared by girls yesterday to mark the International Day of the Girl 2025.

Girls from different parts of South Sudan came together to speak with Parliamentarians, Government officials, NGOs and other partners at the National Transitional Assembly in Juba on Ending Child Marriages in South Sudan.

The event gave girls a chance to share their ideas and concerns on child marriages and question what the different stakeholders are doing to fight child marriages in South Sudan. One girl asked, “how is the government protecting girls with disabilities who are victims of child marriages”.

The Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Nunu Kumba in her remarks promised that the parliament will work hard to push for the laws that protect girls from child marriage and support their rights while Mr. Paul Lusato, Country Director of Plan International, said, “As international organizations, we stand ready to work hand in hand with government institutions, parliamentarians, civil society, and communities to ensure that every girl in South Sudan is free to learn, lead, decide, and thrive and not forced into marriage.”

The girls appealed to the government to prioritize girls' education, setting up of minimum age for child marriage in South Sudan and opening up protection shelters for girls running away from forced child marriage.

The event was coordinated by the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, along with various humanitarian and development partners.

In Sudan, 52% of girls are married off by 18 and over 260,000 are married off by 15 years. Child marriages not only rob these young girls of their future but also have severe health complications on their lives.

Today as we celebrate the Day of the Girl under the theme #"Ending child Marriages" International and youth advocate Diko D Andrew are calling upon all stakeholders to play their part in ending this harmful practice in South Sudan and give the girls are chance at a bright future.

To celebrate International Day of the Girl, 17-year-old Betty China stepped into the role of Ambassador for a day in a powerful moment, an initiative led by International to amplify girls’ voices and leadership.

Under this year’s theme “Ending Child Marriage and Unions”, Betty used her platform to call for stronger laws and policies to protect girls from child marriage.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to EU in South Sudan for partnering with us to make this moment possible. By opening their doors to young leaders like Betty, they help spotlight urgent issues and inspire meaningful change.

In Morobo, with support from Swiss Development & Cooperation, is creating safe spaces for children through our Child Friendly Spaces (CFS). These spaces give children the opportunity to play, learn, and heal in a protective environment, especially in times of crisis and uncertainty.

Here, children can simply be children. They are free to express themselves, make friends, and rebuild confidence while receiving psychosocial support and protection from risks of abuse and exploitation.
By investing in these child friendly spaces, we are investing in a brighter and safer future for every child in Morobo.
