“We are Girls and Not Wives”, were some of the messages shared by girls yesterday to mark the International Day of the Girl 2025.
Girls from different parts of South Sudan came together to speak with Parliamentarians, Government officials, NGOs and other partners at the National Transitional Assembly in Juba on Ending Child Marriages in South Sudan.
The event gave girls a chance to share their ideas and concerns on child marriages and question what the different stakeholders are doing to fight child marriages in South Sudan. One girl asked, “how is the government protecting girls with disabilities who are victims of child marriages”.
The Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Nunu Kumba in her remarks promised that the parliament will work hard to push for the laws that protect girls from child marriage and support their rights while Mr. Paul Lusato, Country Director of Plan International, said, “As international organizations, we stand ready to work hand in hand with government institutions, parliamentarians, civil society, and communities to ensure that every girl in South Sudan is free to learn, lead, decide, and thrive and not forced into marriage.”
The girls appealed to the government to prioritize girls' education, setting up of minimum age for child marriage in South Sudan and opening up protection shelters for girls running away from forced child marriage.
The event was coordinated by the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, along with various humanitarian and development partners.
