🎉 HESS @ 10 Years Anniversary Celebration 🎉

Yesterday, we proudly celebrated 10 years of transforming lives through literacy and empowerment at HelpEducation South Sudan (HESS).

It was a truly remarkable day—filled with joy, reflection, and gratitude. From our humble beginnings in 2015 to reaching over 89,980+ beneficiaries and supporting 50+ schools, this milestone belongs to every student, teacher, partner, and supporter who have been part of our journey.

The celebration at Imperial Plaza brought together inspiring voices, powerful stories, and a shared vision for a brighter future. 💙 It was a beautiful reminder of how far we’ve come—and the lives we’ve touched along the way.

Over the past decade, we have:
📚 Expanded access to Inclusive and Quality Education
👩‍🎓 Empowered young minds, boys, girls, children with disabilities, PTAs, and women
🏫 Strengthened and equipped schools with essential resources and strong leadership.

💙 Built stronger, more resilient communities!

As we reflect on this incredible journey, we are more committed than ever to continue empowering boys, girls, young mothers, and children with disabilities through education.

🙏 Thank you to everyone who celebrated with us and continues to support our mission.

✨ Looking forward to the next chapter of impact—and many more years of transforming lives!

🌳 The green climate Legacy in Awerial: A tale of Shade and Hope!

In some local schools in Awerial County of Lakes State, children sat on arid earth, their minds fighting an intense battle: For years, these children have been learning outside in an open space under the scorching sun, struggling against heat and searching desperately for shade, due to insufficient climate-resilient classrooms.

Then a seed of hope was planted!
Under the Local Response Pooled Fund (LRPF) project, with funding from Save the Children, HESS launched the LRPF project in 19 schools in Awerial County, to address climate issues affecting the schools, where HESS procured and planted seedlings as a way of providing solution to schools' climate vulnerability.

Today, tiny fruit seedlings that were planted are now providing life-changing, cooling shade for learners from the supported 19 schools, particularly those at Gloria Girls School. These schools planted the seedlings which were procured by HESS with funding from Save the Children under the Local Response Pooled Fund, and nurtured them.
The trees are more than just a shade, they are growing fruits, creating natural outdoor learning spaces, and ensuring children can concentrate, excel and protected from the relentless heat.

This proves that addressing global challenges like climate can start with something fundamental as planting a tree in a school yard, turning a place of learning into a place of thriving.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Save the Children South Sudan for their generous support in the success of the LRPF project and we also appreciate the Local Response Pooled Fund leadership for the visionary commitment. Your work in guiding us has been instrumental, demonstrating the great power of locally-led humanitarian action which provide a sustainable change.

🌿 HelpEducation South Sudan (HESS) Commits to Climate-Resilient Education for All Children🌍📚

HESS strongly believes that every child deserves a safe learning environment, regardless of weather conditions or underlying challenges. Yesterday, our Executive Director, Ms. Achol Aguek Biar, had the honor of attending the official launch of the Building the Climate Resilience of Children and Communities through the Education Sector (BRACE) Pilot Project. The launch event was attended by H.E. Josephine Lagu Yanga, Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan for the Service Cluster, Hon. The BRACE Project values at $17 million, is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of General Education and Instruction and Save the Children South Sudan, co-funded by the and the Global Partnership for Education
The project is set to reach 201,172 school children in South Sudan (with 104,894 being female). BRACE is more than just a project, it represents a commitment to directly address the impact of climate change and future risks within South Sudan's education sector.

Through BRACE, school facilities will be retrofitted to strengthen climate resilience. The project also aims to reform education policies and build local capacity, ensuring that resilience begins where it is most needed.

In her heartfelt remarks, H.E. Josephine Lagu called the launch “a promise to the children of South Sudan”, reminding us that education must remain inclusive and child centered.
A child representative strongly stated that climate crisis is a children's crisis, Hon. Dr. Kuyok Abol Kuyok described the initiative as “an investment in stability, opportunity, and breaking the cycle of climate-induced vulnerability.”

🌍📚 Building Stronger Teachers for Brighter Futures

On 27th September 2025, in Yirol East County, Lakes State, 20 Accelerated Learning Programme (ALP) teachers completed a two-week intensive training under the Girls’ Education Accelerator Project, implemented by HelpEducation SOUTH SUDAN (HESS) through Save the Children South Sudan with support from the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) and the Ministry of General Education and Instruction (MoGEI).

The training equipped facilitators with vital skills in lesson planning, classroom management, gender awareness, peace education, child protection, and more—ensuring teachers are better prepared to deliver inclusive, quality education to out-of-school children and youth.

💬 Ms. Aluel Kuch Koch from Tin-agau ALP Center shared:

“I am going to replicate the knowledge I have acquired with my learners so that they benefit directly from this training.”

💬 Mr. Adeer Malual Garang from Malek ALP Center added:

“I have acquired sufficient knowledge on how best adults learn, peace education, climate change, and child protection. I will share this with my learners and fellow teachers.”

Their reflections highlight the transformative power of investing in teachers—knowledge that doesn’t stop with them, but spreads to entire communities of learners.

✨ With continued support in resources, textbooks, and incentives, these teachers stand ready to build brighter futures for children across Lakes State, especially girls and children with disabilities.
