Statement of the President of SSWEN at the UNSC on behalf of the women and girls of South Sudan August 6th, 2026

SSWEN was honored to participate in the BRIDGE Project Regional Learning Exchange Programme organized by FIDA South Sudan in partnership with FIDA Kenya and FIDA Uganda, with support from UNDP and the African Development Bank. The four-day exchange brought together women-led civil society organizations from South Sudan, Kenya, and Uganda to strengthen collaboration, institutional capacity, and knowledge sharing on legal aid, transitional justice, and inclusive governance.

Throughout the learning exchange, participants engaged in insightful discussions and practical learning on political economy analysis, transitional justice, strategic litigation, women's political participation, institutional strengthening, organizational sustainability, adaptive programming in fragile contexts, gender equality, and the role of traditional justice systems. The programme also included a valuable learning visit to Lang'ata Women's Maximum Security Prison, where participants explored rehabilitation-focused approaches that uphold human dignity and support reintegration.

The exchange reinforced the importance of strong institutions, regional partnerships, survivor-centred justice, and women's leadership in building peaceful, inclusive, and accountable societies. We return inspired, better equipped with practical tools, strengthened networks, and renewed commitment to advancing women's rights, access to justice, peacebuilding, and inclusive governance in South Sudan.

We extend our sincere appreciation to FIDA South Sudan, FIDA Kenya, FIDA Uganda, UNDP, and the African Development Ban for creating this invaluable platform for learning, collaboration, and regional solidarity. Together, we continue to build resilient institutions and champion gender equality across the region.

The South Sudan Women in Politics Forum, convened under the theme "Advancing Women's Political Engagement through the South Sudan Women in Politics Forum," was successfully held at Palm Africa Hotel, Juba.

Organized by Voice for Change and the South Sudan Women's Empowerment Network (SSWEN) in partnership with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Political Affairs Division, the two-day forum brought together women leaders, representatives of political parties, policymakers, and emerging women leaders from across South Sudan to strengthen collaboration, share experiences, and promote meaningful participation of women in political and decision-making processes.

We were deeply honored that the forum was officially opened by Prof. Julie Aker Duany , whose inspiring remarks underscored the importance of women's leadership and inclusive governance. The event was officially closed by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Atong Kuol Manyang, who reaffirmed the Government's commitment to empowering women and young leaders to actively participate in shaping the future of South Sudan.

The forum provided a valuable platform for networking, mentorship, dialogue, and the development of practical strategies to advance women's political representation and leadership. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to working together to overcome barriers and create a more inclusive political landscape where women can fully exercise their leadership potential.

SSWEN extends its sincere appreciation to all participants, partners, facilitators, and distinguished guests whose contributions made the forum a resounding success. Together, we continue to champion a future where women's voices are heard, valued, and represented at every level of leadership.
Together, we are advancing women's leadership, strengthening democracy, and building a more inclusive South Sudan.
