On this International Day of Plant Health 2026, we join the global call for stronger biosecurity and sustainable food systems.

Pests, diseases, and weeds destroy up to 40% of global food production each year, contributing directly to food insecurity and an estimated loss of over $220 billion in global trade. Healthy plants are the foundation of healthy communities. 🌾

As an indigenous organization deeply rooted in rural communities, we recognize that protecting plant health goes beyond modern interventions alone. For generations, local farmers have preserved crops through traditional knowledge, cultural practices, and local innovations that continue to sustain livelihoods today.

We remain committed to promoting an integrated approach to plant health that combines best agronomic practices with indigenous knowledge and community-driven innovation for resilient agriculture and sustainable food security.

Tracking impact: 🍞🎂

In 2022, STO met Sasa a young man full of potentials and dreams, but lacking the skills to turn them into reality. Through the Skills Empowerment and Employment of Youth in South Sudan Project, Sasa enrolled into bakery and confectionery training programme supported by UNDP South Sudan and funded by Netherlands Embassy in South Sudan. Today, he is the proud CEO of Sasa Innovative Bakery in Yambio, known for amazing cakes and quality bakery products.

What started as a dream has now become a growing business creating inspiration and opportunities for other youth in the community. 👏🏾

We celebrate Sasa’s hard work, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit.

Support local businesses and place your orders with Sasa Innovative Bakery today 🍰

🐖 Pig farming continues to stand out as one of the most profitable livestock enterprises and an important source of animal protein for many communities. However, limited access to improved husbandry practices has remained a key challenge for many young farmers.

Through the SEED4Youth project, supported by UNDP South Sudan with funding from the Netherlands Embassy in South Sudan, STO is currently training over 245 youths in Yambio, with more than 65% women participation, strengthening inclusive skills development and youth empowerment in agribusiness. The training is equipping participants with practical piggery management skills, including:
• Proper hygiene and animal health practices
• parasites and disease control measures
• Castration and detoothing techniques
• Housing construction and management
• Feeding requirements and nutrition management etc.

Upon completion, the youth will be graduated with piglets to kick-start their own pig farming enterprises, creating a pathway toward self-employment and income generation.
This initiative is expected to significantly enhance livelihoods, strengthen household resilience, and contribute to long-term economic transformation within the community

In many marketplaces in South Sudan, women continue to trade under the shadow of barriers, limited access to mentorship, challenges with business registration, and the heavy silence around GBV, often without safe spaces to speak or seek support.

To change this narrative, Star Trust Organisation with support from UNDP South Sudan and funding from JICA South Sudan, is standing alongside businesswomen in Yambio and Masia markets. Through dedicated help desk centers, women are accessing counselling, legal support, and practical business advisory services, turning uncertainty into confidence and isolation into collective strength.

“Before, I didn’t know where to report my challenges or how to grow my business. Now, I feel heard, supported, and more confident to stand for myself and improve my work,” shares a beneficiary from Masia Market.

International Labour Day – May 1st
Today we celebrate the strength, and dedication of workers everywhere. Born from the global call to improve working conditions, Labour Day reminds us that dignity at work is not a luxury, it is a right.

This year’s theme, “Ensuring a Healthy Psychosocial Working Environment,” highlights something vital yet often overlooked: wellbeing is not only physical, but mental and social too. For the thousands of farmers we work with, this means safe and secured farmland, reliable markets, and the recognition they truly deserve.

We proudly celebrate the tireless efforts of our farming communities, especially rural women and youth, whose hands sow the seeds, prepare the land, and feed the nation.

Let us continue to make farming not just a livelihood, but a respected, supported, and sustainable path for all.

Homegrown School Feeding in Action!

Targeting the Homegrown School Feeding Programme, STO is supporting cooperatives to produce organic, locally grown food that is supplied to schools in Yambio and Nzara.

This is made possible through the Joint Resilience Programme, where World Food Programme STO, World Vision, vendors, farmers, and schools work hand in hand to nourish children and strengthen local livelihoods.

As part of this shared effort, STO is committed to quality at every step, ensuring that food is carefully cleaned and inspected, with even the smallest impurities removed before it reaches our children.

Healthy children, stronger communities, brighter futures. 🌾📚✨
