The school assessment exercise which kicked off on Tuesday 5th May 2026 informed the selection of schools to be considered for retrofitting under the Building Resilient Climate Resilience of Children and communities through Education (BRACE) project implemented by Save the Children in partnership with the government and local partners such as SPEDEP, HESS, HASS and CSI.

BRACE project focuses on building resilient schools, integrating climate education and establishing early warning systems for over 200,000 children with a strong focus on girls’ education and safety. The project is implemented in six states of South Sudan, in Unity, Jonglei, Eastern Equatoria, Warrap State, Upper Nile and Lakes State with funding from Green Climate Fund (GCE) and Global Partnership for Education (GPE).

The project’s aim is to strengthen Education systems against climate shocks such as floods and droughts while safeguarding children’s right to safe, inclusive and uninterrupted learning.

In Every Child She Vaccinates, Hope Lives On - Ajoba’s Story.

For 19 years, Ajoba has been on the frontlines of care in Abyei, vaccinating children and mothers against preventable diseases.

“Vaccines are Safe, they bring HOPE. Hope that a mother will not lose her baby to a preventable disease & that is why I love my job” she said

Today, with funding from EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid (ECHO), Ajoba and her team have helped vaccinate over 95% of children during measles campaigns in underserved areas of Abyei targeting the host community, IDPs, refugees and returnees.

This World Immunization Week, we celebrate heroes and heroines like Ajoba, protecting lives, one vaccine at a time.

Happening Now!

From virtual learning to real world action, Save the Children Intermediate Humanitarian Programme (SHIP) is in full swing!

After completing a two month distance learning phase (23 Feb – 24 Apr 2026), 37 participants which includes 24 Save the Children International staff and 13 partner staff have now stepped into an intensive six day residential simulation (27 Apr – 2 May 2026), putting their skills to the test with one goal: stronger, faster, and higher quality emergency response.

This hands on experience is equipping teams with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to respond effectively when it matters most, guided by core humanitarian principles and best practices.

This is because every second counts in an emergency and every trained responder makes a difference.

From Barely Breathing to Smiling and Playing Again: A Family’s Return to Hope.

At just 10 months old, Abraham* arrived at the clinic barely holding on, weak, underweight, and struggling to breathe after days of illness that turned into pneumonia.

His mother, Mary*, feared she was losing him.
“When he fell sick, I thought I was being sent away,” she said.
“But they told me there was help. That’s how we reached the children’s clinic and that’s why he is alive today.” she added

At the Save the Children EU Funded stabilization centre, Abraham received urgent care. Within a day, his breathing eased. Severely malnourished, he was referred for nutrition support his weight just 5.37 kg, MUAC 11.3. He was started on therapeutic food and treatment, while his mother was guided on feeding and care.

Two weeks later, everything had changed. He weighed 6.1 kg. His MUAC improved to 11.9. He was smiling, active, and playing again.
“He now runs everywhere and plays with other children. I am happy,” Mary expressed.

Abraham’s recovery is more than a story of survival, it is what happens when life-saving services exist in time. But these lifelines are fragile. With shrinking global funding and rising needs, such moments of hope risk disappearing just when they are needed most.

Through EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid funding, Save the Children continues to deliver critical nutrition and health care in Abyei reaching conflict-affected families, returnees, refugees, IDPs, and vulnerable households, including female headed and child headed families.

Today, Save the Children South Sudan was privileged to host several climate change activists from seven different schools in Juba representing environment clubs at their respective schools. The one-day child led climate action workshop focused on empowering children’s leadership on climate change, creating awareness on the impact of climate on education, health and safety and how to integrate climate change into government policy.

During the workshop, children were encouraged to design solutions as key stakeholders fighting to save the planet. They also learnt about the environment, climate crisis and how to assess and reduce risk, prepare and respond to hazards and threats.

The workshop was organized by the Building the Climate Resilience of Children and Communities through the Education Sector (BRACE) Project which is a multi-country initiative funded by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) and the Green Climate Fund@ (GCF) and implemented by Save the Children in collaboration with National Ministry of General Education and Instruction and consortium Partners.

Through this project SCI works with government, teachers, local partners and donors to develop solutions that climate proof education and promote climate justice by promoting climate resilient learners, climate resilient schools and advocating for policies and financing that support adaptation and resilience in the education sector.

In Abyei, South Sudan, communities are transforming and protecting their own futures with support from Save the Children’s SSJR project.
Funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Dutch Relief Alliance, this project delivers integrated cash assistance to vulnerable families, food security interventions, and protection, an impact clearly observed during a member field assessment visit to the area in March.

From Cash for Assets, VSLA Groups, Cash Intervention, Child Protection interventions to climate resilient farming, tangible results are evident. Communities are not just receiving support, they are leading solutions.

In one village, residents identified flooding as a major threat. Today, with tools and cash provided, they are digging trenches ahead of the rainy season, protecting homes, farmland, and even access to schools.
What once cut off children from education is now being fixed by the community itself.

Abyei, 30 March 2026, From 24–26 March 2026, EU delegation visited Abyei to engage with local communities and evaluate the impact of ECHO CASH funded assistance.

During the visit, families spoke about the increasing cost of food and the growing economic pressures they face, particularly vulnerable women who have lost everything and have been displaced from the conflict in Sudan and also internal conflicts.
Despite these challenges, beneficiaries shared that cash assistance and free access to healthcare are helping them rebuild their lives, enabling them to send their children to school and start small businesses with the cash support and assistance.

“We are extremely happy to see that the people who care about us and support us with money and also free health care are not only giving us support but are also coming to see us and listen to us. May God bless them,” said Sara*, one of the beneficiaries.

The EU Delegation urged all key stakeholders including national, international, and community based organizations, the government, private institutions to strengthen coordination and work collaboratively to reach a broader number of vulnerable people.
During a meeting with National and International Partners and NGOs, The EU delegation emphasized the importance of avoiding duplication of humanitarian services to the same beneficiaries and instead focusing on expanding coverage and developing more sustainable, resilience building programs for communities.

Save the Children is currently implementing the ECHO Cash Consortium program alongside health and nutrition interventions in Abyei with key partners, targeting the most vulnerable groups, including refugees, returnees from the Sudan conflict, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and host communities.
