SPLM-IO says Unity State education minister arrested in Juba
National Security Service (NSS) agents arrested Tot Jock Chieng, Unity State’s Minister of General Education, at Juba Airport on Friday as he attempted to board a UN flight to Bentiu, SPLM-IO has said.
Chieng, a member of the SPLM-IO, was traveling with Unity State’s Deputy Governor Tor Tungwar Kueiguong when NSS blocked their departure. While Kueiguong was allowed to return home, Chieng was detained and taken to an undisclosed location.
SPLM-IO’s Unity State spokesperson, Dhoal Koryom Linding, condemned the arrest, calling it unjustified and part of a pattern of detaining opposition officials. The Office of the First Vice President also confirmed the incident, demanding Chieng’s immediate release.
Government officials have not commented on the matter. The arrest comes amid rising tensions between the government and SPLM-IO, following recent clashes between SSPDF and opposition forces in Nasir County.

THE HIDDEN TRUTH BEHIND CROP PRODUCTION CHALLENGES.

In agriculture, it is common for farmers to blame external factors for failed crop production. However, in many cases, the root cause lies in their own management practices. A lack of attention to critical aspects of crop production can lead to poor yields, which could have been avoided with proper care and planning.

Good Agronomic Practices (GAPs):
Good Agronomic Practices are often overlooked but are essential for successful crop production. Farmers must focus on practices such as:

• Effective W**d Management: W**ds compete with crops for nutrients, water, and light, directly affecting yields.

• Pest and Disease Control: Regular monitoring and timely intervention can prevent significant losses.

• Soil Fertility Management: The application of the right amount and type of fertilisers is crucial for crop health.

• Plant Spacing and Timing: Proper spacing ensures plants have enough room to grow, while timely planting maximizes the growing season.

• Land Preparation and Variety Selection: Preparing the land well and choosing the right crop variety suited to the environment can boost yields.

• Water Conservation Measures: Efficient irrigation systems and conservation practices ensure crops get adequate water without wastage.

Management is Key:
Farmers must take a proactive role in promoting factors that enhance crop production while minimizing those that reduce it. Management goes beyond just applying inputs—it involves constant decision-making and adjustments to ensure:

• Optimal Crop Growth: Creating conditions that allow crops to thrive.

• Profitability: Balancing costs and returns to ensure sustainable farming.

The Takeaway:
Farmers must recognize the power they hold to influence crop production outcomes. By addressing factors within their control and embracing good agronomic practices, they can significantly improve yields and achieve sustainable profitability.
