Help a Child - HaC South Sudan

In Pibor County, Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA), Boruboru is proving that play can be a powerful pathway to peace.

Last week, Help a Child, through the Kids@Risk project funded by EO Metterdaad , organized a Boruboru tournament that brought children together in a shared space for play, connection and positive interaction.

Beyond competition, the tournament provided a meaningful platform for strengthening social cohesion, teamwork and mutual respect among children. By creating safe spaces where children can interact, build friendships and learn peaceful ways of relating to one another, Boruboru is contributing to stronger relationships within communities.

Building on a locally valued game, the Kids@Risk project is using Boruboru as an approach to strengthen child participation, protection and peacebuilding. Each game provides children with an opportunity to cooperate, communicate and experience the values of inclusion and peaceful coexistence.

Through the support of EO Metterdaad, Help a Child continues to invest in opportunities that empower children to become positive agents of peace within their communities.

In Pibor, Boruboru is more than a game. It is creating connections, strengthening social bonds and helping children build a foundation for peace.

Food insecurity continues to place millions of people in South Sudan at risk, with children among the most vulnerable.

A prolonged dry spell threatens to reverse recent food security gains, increase displacement and heighten protection risks. According to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis, at least 7.8 million people were projected to face acute food insecurity at IPC Phase 3 or above.

At the same time, acute malnutrition remains at critical levels in crisis-affected and hard-to-reach communities. Conflict, displacement, extreme weather, disease outbreaks, poor water and sanitation conditions, and limited access to health and nutrition services continue to put children’s health, growth and development at risk.

For Help a Child South Sudan, strengthening food security means more than responding to hunger. It means supporting families to build resilient livelihoods, improve access to nutritious food, strengthen child nutrition, and create safer and healthier environments where children can grow and thrive.

Every child deserves nutritious food, good health and a future filled with opportunity.

We call on partners, communities, donors and stakeholders to strengthen investment in food security, nutrition, resilient livelihoods and essential services. 🏗️ Barynwiny Child-Friendly Space Nears Completion

Construction of the new Child-Friendly Space (CFS) at Barynwiny Returnees Settlement in Aweil Center County, Northern Bahr El Ghazal State, is now at its final stage and nearing completion with fence and newly drilled borehole.

The new facility will provide children with a safe, inclusive and supportive environment where they can learn, play, interact with their peers and access essential child protection and psychosocial support services.

Help a Child South Sudan continues to monitor the final construction works to ensure quality and timely completion. Once operational, the CFS will strengthen access to safe spaces and contribute to the protection, learning and overall well-being of children within the returnee community.

This activity is being implemented with support from UMCOR - United Methodist Committee On Relief.

💧 Improving Access to Safe Water

Help a Child South Sudan has established a new borehole at Udhaba Child Friendly Space in Aweil Center Town, improving access to safe and clean water for more than 500 children and members of the surrounding communities.

The new water point will provide reliable access to water for drinking, hygiene and other daily needs, while contributing to a healthier and safer environment for children and families.

With support from the Stichting Pharus Foundation, this initiative is helping bring essential services closer to communities and strengthening the wellbeing of children.

Through the Young Reporters Program in Aweil Center Town, more than 16 young reporters with support funds from Stichting Pharus were trained and equipped with skills to document and share stories on issues affecting children in their communities.

One of the young reporters, James Yel Chan, shared a story from the Boru boru campaign, highlighting how sport can promote child protection, education, peace and social cohesion.

The initiative strengthens meaningful child participation by creating opportunities for children to speak out, report and advocate for positive change.
