Capacity Strengthening of Teachers, PTAs and SMCs under the SSJR Project

Under the South Sudan Joint Response (SSJR) Project, funded by the Government of the Netherlands through the Dutch Relief Alliance (DRA), and with Help a Child (HaC) serving as both lead and member, a two-day capacity strengthening training was conducted for teachers, Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), and School Management Committees (SMCs) from seven schools within Pibor Town.

The training took place from 19th to 20th May 2026 and aimed to strengthen school governance, improve community participation in education, and enhance the roles of teachers, PTAs, and SMCs in promoting safe, inclusive, and effective learning environments for children.

As we continue to serve, let’s stay alert and protect one another.

⚠️ Ebola Alert: How to Protect Yourself ⚠️

Ebola is a serious viral disease, but the risk can be reduced by taking simple preventive steps:

🧼 Wash your hands regularly** with soap and clean water, or use hand sanitiser.
😷 Avoid crowded areas if an outbreak has been reported.
💉 Seek medical help immediately if you or someone close shows symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, or unusual bleeding.

Protect yourself. Protect your family. Protect your community.

We are committed to being trustworthy and accountable to the children, families, and communities we support, and to the partners and supporters who stand with us.

Every action, every resource, and every promise must serve one purpose: creating real impact with honesty, dignity, and responsibility.

Because the people we support deserve transparency.
And the people supporting us deserve confidence.

Through the BOB psychosocial support program, children and their parents are supported to recognise and manage emotions, cope with difficult experiences, and strengthen family relationships. Using creative activities, play, and storytelling, children are given the chance to express themselves, process trauma, and rebuild confidence in a safe and caring environment.

In South Sudan, Early Childhood Development and care are gaining more attention, with Help a Child South Sudan playing a leading role as Board Chair of the National Education Coalition_South Sudan. This is an important step forward, but the reality remains clear: many young children still do not have access to proper early learning opportunities because there are not enough ECD centres.

Investing in psychosocial support and Early Childhood Development is not just about education. It is about healing, protection, resilience, and giving children the strong foundation they need for the future.

When children are supported early, families become stronger, communities become healthier, and the future becomes brighter.

Every child deserves the best start in life.

Yet in low-income countries, only one in five children has access to preschool education, while millions miss out on nutrition, healthcare, and nurturing care.

As we encourage parents to support their children from the earliest years, we must also work together to create safe, caring, and learning-friendly environments where every child can grow and thrive.

Help a Child believes investing in Early Childhood Development means building brighter futures from the very beginning.

Parenting is one of the most important foundations for a child’s growth.

For Kaka, a mother and participant in the parenting session in Pibor, the sessions have helped her understand the value of love, patience, and listening in raising children.

“The parenting session taught me that love, patience and listening help children grow with confidence and behave well.”
— Kaka, mother and parenting session participant

Through parenting sessions, caregivers are gaining practical knowledge on how to support children’s emotional, social, and learning development at home and in the community.

When parents are supported, children are empowered.

We empower people.

One Caregiver. Many Children.

Meet Simon Moses, a dedicated Early Childhood Development caregiver at Lukuryang ECD Center in Pibor.

The center is funded by UNICEF and implemented by Help a Child to support young children with early learning opportunities.

Trained under the project, Simon is now the only caregiver at the center, managing all classes alone while helping children learn, play, and prepare for primary school.

«“Sometimes it is difficult because I handle all the classes alone, but I continue because the children need support.”
— Simon Moses, ECD caregiver»

Despite limited opportunities for further education, Simon continues to serve with commitment and care.

His story reminds us that investing in caregivers means investing in children’s future.

Every child deserves a safe place to learn, grow, and dream.

With support from UNICEF South Sudan, with support funds from the KOICA 우간다사무소 (KOICA Uganda Office), and Help a Child, we are implementing the Strengthening Access to Education in Wau County, Western Bahr El Ghazal State (WBS) project, and we are piloting context-specific Early Childhood Education interventions in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) to help children survive and thrive.

This initiative is improving access to quality education, supporting safer learning environments, and equipping children with the tools they need to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

From Wau to Pibor, the mission remains clear: no child should be left behind. Because when a child learns, a community rises — and the future begins to rewrite itself.

This Mother’s Day, Help a Child celebrates the strength, sacrifice, and unconditional love of mothers everywhere. ❤️

A mother’s care begins long before a child can say “thank you.” During the first 1,000 days of life, children need proper nutrition, healthcare, protection, and support to grow healthy and strong.

As Help a Child, we believe every mother deserves the support needed to give her child the best start in life. Together, we can help build healthier families, stronger communities, and brighter futures for every child.
Because when mothers are empowered, children thrive.

Help a Child continues to amplify the voices of children and youth through storytelling, advocacy, and community engagement.

The Young Reporters initiative, previously supported by UNICEF South Sudan and now being continued with support from Stichting Pharus, is empowering young people to use journalism, music, poetry, radio, and digital media to speak out on issues affecting their communities.

From education and mental health to climate action and child protection, young voices are creating real impact and inspiring change.
Every child has a voice. Every story matters.
