More Than a Game: Boru Boru in Manlor

Boru Boru is more than a game. In Tonj North, it is creating moments of happiness while bringing children and communities together through play, learning and positive engagement.

This week, we are in Manlor, where children are enjoying the game while building confidence, teamwork and friendships. The game also provides a platform to share important messages on child protection, education, inclusion and peaceful coexistence.

Through the South Sudan Joint Response (SSJR)funded by the Dutch Relief Alliance, Help a Child is using Boru Boru to create spaces where children can play, participate, learn and have their voices heard.

In Manlor, the smiles tell the story: play can create happiness, strengthen connections and inspire positive change.

đź“» Amplifying Young Voices to End Early Child Marriage

As part of the Young Reporters Programme, children participated in a one-hour radio talk show on Akolyam Radio in Aweil Town, focusing on “Ending Early Child Marriage.”

The radio discussion provided a platform for children to raise awareness about the harmful effects of early child marriage, advocate for children’s rights, and encourage parents, caregivers and community leaders to protect girls and support their education.

The programme received positive feedback and appreciation from listeners, highlighting the value of meaningful child participation in addressing issues that affect children and their communities.

The Young Reporters Programme is implemented by Help a Child South Sudan with funding support from Stichting Pharus Foundation, empowering children to use their voices to advocate for their rights and wellbeing.

Creating Safe Spaces for Children Through My Friend BoB

From 10–13 August 2026, Help a Child South Sudan conducted My Friend BoB sessions in Kavachoch, Lenyeris, St. Francis, and Langachod in Pibor County under the Kids@Risk Project, funded by EO Metterdaad.

Through interactive and child-friendly activities, the sessions provided children with safe spaces to express their feelings, build confidence, strengthen resilience, and develop positive coping skills.

The sessions contribute to strengthening children’s psychosocial wellbeing, emotional development, and protection, ensuring that children feel heard, valued, and supported.

Every child deserves a safe space to learn, play, express themselves, and thrive.

“Education Should Be Equal for Girls and Boys” | Inter-School Debate Finals | Tonj North - Awul

On 14 August 2026, Help a Child South Sudan conducted the Inter-School Debate Finals between Warrap Adventist Primary School and Comboni Primary School in Tonj North County, Warrap State, under the theme “Education Should Be Equal for Girls and Boys.”

The debate provided children with a platform to discuss the importance of equal access to quality education for both girls and boys, while strengthening their confidence, critical thinking, public speaking and leadership skills.

After an engaging exchange of ideas and arguments, Warrap Adventist Primary School emerged as the winning team, demonstrating strong teamwork, confidence and presentation skills. We congratulate both schools for their excellent participation and for using their voices to advocate for equal educational opportunities for every child.

Beyond the competition, the debate promoted child participation, gender equality, peaceful dialogue and social cohesion, encouraging children to become active voices for positive change in their schools and communities.

The activity was conducted under the South Sudan Protracted Crisis Joint Response (SSJR) project, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands ( Netherlands Embassy in South Sudan ) through the Dutch Relief Alliance (DRA) and implemented by Help a Child South Sudan.

When girls and boys have equal opportunities to learn, communities become stronger and the future becomes brighter.

Building Resilience, One Child at a Time
In Barnyiwiny Returnees Settlement, Nyalath Payam, Aweil Centre County, children came together for a My Friend session facilitated by the Help a Child Aweil team;creating a safe and supportive space where children could connect, express themselves, play, learn and strengthen their emotional wellbeing.

For children living in returnee settings, adjusting to new environments and experiences can be challenging. Through interactive and child-friendly activities, My Friend helps children build confidence, develop positive coping skills, strengthen friendships and feel a greater sense of safety and belonging.

Every child deserves more than protection from harm. They deserve opportunities to heal, learn, play, build friendships and hope for a brighter future.

At Help a Child South Sudan, we continue working with children, families and communities to create environments where children feel heard, supported and valued.
Because when children feel safe and supported, hope begins to grow.

Boru Boru Knockout Stages Underway in Tonj North!

The Boru Boru knockout stages are underway in Awul and Manlor, Tonj North County, under the South Sudan Protracted Crisis Joint Response (SSJR) Project.

Children are displaying exceptional skills, teamwork, confidence and determination, while using the game as a platform to learn and speak about child protection.

Throughout the competition, key messages focus on keeping children safe from violence, abuse, neglect, exploitation and harmful practices, while encouraging children to know their rights, speak up, support one another and seek help when they feel unsafe.

Boru Boru is therefore more than a game. It creates a safe and engaging space where children can participate, build confidence, strengthen friendships and promote peaceful coexistence within their communities.

The activity is implemented by Help a Child South Sudan under the SSJR Project, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands ( Netherlands Embassy in South Sudan ) through the Dutch Relief Alliance (DRA).
