"A Call to Action: Harnessing South Sudan's Resources for the Future of its Youth"

By Deng Makuei Anyieth Aka Mcee Eminent Makuei CEO of Youth Empowerment Organization . South Sudan

As I pen this message, my heart aches for the countless South Sudanese suffering in foreign lands as migrants and refugees. Our nation, blessed with an abundance of natural resources such as oil, gold, and fertile land suitable for agriculture, stands in stark contrast to the dire circumstances of its citizens. The wealth generated from these resources, however, is often monopolized by a select few, fueling rampant corruption and tribalism that has become the hallmark of our country's leadership.

The stark reality is that our politicians prioritize personal gain over the welfare of the people. While they send their children to study abroad, our educators in primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions struggle with unpaid salaries. The resources meant for our development are instead used to build lavish homes in foreign countries and neighboring nations like Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda.

Our young people, seeking better education and job opportunities, embark on perilous journeys to Europe, only to meet tragic ends in the desert or at sea. Meanwhile, the government remains alarmingly silent on the challenges facing our youth. The promises of peace have yielded nothing but war, and the future looks bleak for those left behind.

The lack of opportunities in South Sudan is glaring. Our youth are mired in poverty, struggling to access basic necessities like education and healthcare. Infrastructure development has been neglected, and the potential of our young people remains untapped.

It is imperative that our leaders recognize the gravity of this situation and take immediate action to address the systemic failures that have led to this crisis. We need a new paradigm, one that prioritizes the welfare of our citizens, invests in our infrastructure, and provides opportunities for our youth to thrive.

As the CEO of Youth Empowerment Organization . South Sudan, I urge our leaders to take responsibility for the future of South Sudan. Let us work together to harness our resources for the benefit of all, rather than a privileged few. The time for change is now.

Sincerely,

Deng Makuei Anyieth

From Pride to Purpose: A Wake-Up Call for Our Community

Our community is at a critical crossroads. Poverty is deepening, youth unemployment is rampant, and many of our people are displaced—living in camps or struggling as refugees. Yet, month after month, we raise tens of thousands of dollars for uniform launches, ayayahs, riongs, and lavish leadership ceremonies and elections that drain resources in a single day. These events, once rooted in cultural pride, have become rituals of vanity, offering no lasting value or development.

Instead of investing in education, farming, or youth empowerment, we celebrate while our young people drop out of school or join gangs groups. Wrestling has become a daily obsession, overshadowing the urgency of food production and economic survival during farming season, when their energy and labor are most needed in the fields. The very energy that should be driving progress is being redirected towards clan-based competition, prideful cultural exhibitions and symbolic leadership.

Youth now aspire to be “champions of their clans” rather than builders of their future. Leadership roles meant for youth in their 20s and 30s are being hijacked by “senior youth” who refuse to step aside. Merit is replaced by money. Those with vision but no wealth are elbowed out—even at the level of a clan.

We are losing our tradition of quality leadership. We are losing our youth to distraction, exclusion, and despair. It’s time to reclaim our values. Let us declare that:
-Major traditional events should be annual, not monthly spectacles.
-Community funds must be directed toward education, agriculture, and entrepreneurship.
-Youth leadership must be earned through capacity, not cash.
-Elders must mentor, not dominate, youth spaces.

Let us build a community where pride is rooted in progress, not performance. Where culture uplifts, not overshadows, development. Where every dollar raised creates value—not just memories.

The future is ours to shape. Let’s choose purpose over pride.
