JUBA - South Sudan’s parliament says a recently approved medical allowance for lawmakers applies only to serving members, amid concerns from former legislators who were left out.

The Parliamentary Information Committee says the US$5,000 payment was issued exclusively to current members of parliament to address growing health concerns within the legislative body.

The clarification follows complaints from some revoked lawmakers who argue the money should be considered part of arrears owed for their time in office.

But Information Committee Chairperson Oliver Mori Benjamin says former MPs are instead eligible for separate post-service benefits, which must be processed through parliament’s accounts department and the Ministry of Finance.

He says the decision to release the emergency funds came after more than 100 members of parliament died over the past two years, raising alarm over the welfare of lawmakers.

The government says the remaining portion of the approved $30,000 support package is yet to be paid.

House Republicans Spearhead Bipartisan Package to Lower Housing Costs for American Families.

"Republicans are taking the lead on addressing increased housing costs and lack of quality supply that impact nearly every American family.

House Republicans have been working hard on a strong bipartisan package to lower the cost of housing for working families and put more American families into homes.

We are grateful for the President’s support, and the House and Senate remained closely aligned on getting this legislation to the President's desk in short order." —Speaker Mike Johnson.

JUBA - South Sudan’s peace monitoring body has warned that proposed unilateral amendments to the 2018 peace agreement could destabilise the country and undermine its fragile transition.

The Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) said changes to key provisions of the peace deal risk triggering renewed instability at a time when the country is already facing rising security challenges.

Presenting its latest report to parliament on Wednesday, the commission warned that “proposed unilateral amendments” could weaken the foundation of the agreement, which ended years of civil war in South Sudan.

RJMEC highlighted growing concerns over the state of security arrangements, noting that key institutions established under the peace deal have collapsed. The body also pointed to increasing ceasefire violations and a decline in political consensus among the agreement’s signatories.

In particular, the commission criticised efforts to remove requirements for a permanent constitution and a national census ahead of the planned 2026 elections, warning that such moves could undermine the credibility of the electoral process.

The report further noted fragmentation within the Necessary Unified Forces, which were meant to be integrated under the agreement, raising concerns about their ability to guarantee security during the transition.

RJMEC also cited continued violence in parts of the country, including Jonglei and Akobo, where clashes have displaced civilians and heightened humanitarian concerns.

The commission urged lawmakers to protect the integrity of the peace agreement and ensure that any amendments are carried out through inclusive dialogue among all parties.

It further called for the involvement of regional guarantors in discussions to maintain a broad consensus and prevent further erosion of the deal.

South Sudan has launched an advanced air traffic management system and commissioned a new control tower in Juba, in a move authorities say restores the country’s full control over its airspace.

The system was inaugurated on Monday by President Salva Kiir Mayardit alongside senior government and aviation officials, marking what officials described as a major milestone since independence.

Officials say the new technology is expected to strengthen coordination of international flights and enhance national security.

Sudan had been managing South Sudan’s upper airspace under a temporary 2016 arrangement brokered by the International Civil Aviation Organization, an agreement that was meant to end in 2019 but persisted due to delays in training local personnel.

The arrangement became unstable earlier this year amid conflict in Sudan, culminating in February 2026 when Sudan closed South Sudan’s airspace, disrupting international flight operations.

Speaking at the launch, President Kiir said the new system restores national sovereignty over the country’s skies.
