A Sincere Thank You for Your Efforts!
The sudden passing of our former President of the Republic of Suriname, H.E. Chandrikapersad Santokhi, was experienced by me, as undoubtedly by many others, as a bolt from the blue. Through this message, I wish to sincerely express my gratitude for all the efforts he made for our nation in general, but specifically for many religious organizations in Suriname. I would also like to briefly highlight a few remarkable moments with/about him on his (earthly) farewell day.
My first meeting with him was when he served as Minister of Justice and Police. Due to my close involvement as a Pandit in the (general) religious activities in Suriname, and also (at that time) specifically as a Spiritual Caregiver for the various Penitentiary Institutions, I advised him on the implementation of many matters concerning the spiritual well-being of detainees, as well as police officers. An important aspect of this included, among others, the employment of spiritual leaders from various denominations within the Police Force of Suriname, similar to what we know as chaplains within the National Army of Suriname. He was very positive about this, and a process was initiated, but after the change of power in 2010, unfortunately, for reasons still unknown to me, this initiative stalled. I express the hope that this noble idea may still be realized.
Before the 2020 elections, he asked me whether I had any interest in entering politics and whether I would be willing to serve the people of Suriname as a parliamentarian. I told him that it is my personal view that a full-time role as a Spiritual Leader cannot be combined with politics. After all, religion should never be misused for political purposes, especially considering the different political affiliations of members of various religious organizations. After the election victory of the VHP in 2020, he approached me again to contribute my efforts through other “channels,” to which I once again presented the aforementioned argument to him.
Our relationship was further strengthened when he approached me to act as a Pandit during his spiritual inauguration as head of state, with the corresponding hymns in Sanskrit. Even the Prime Minister of India, H.E. Narendra Modi, was impressed by this and posted the video. In January 2022, as the newly appointed President of the Vereniging Sanatan Dharm Maha Sabha Suriname, I paid an official visit together with the executive board to him at the Presidential Palace. Since then, I have had the privilege and pleasure of contributing through various committees, mostly with a religious character or overlap.
In November 2022, a special moment arose in which I served as one of the advisors in the preparations to participate in the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, which was to be held from January 8–10, 2023, in Indore, India. I had the honor of traveling to India as part of a government delegation under his leadership to participate in this important International Diaspora Conference. During this 17th World Conference, he was awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (the highest distinction within the Indian Diaspora for exceptional achievements) by the President of India, H.E. Draupadi Murmu. The seed for my personal interest in the Hindu Diaspora was essentially planted here. Following this visit, many bilateral projects between Suriname and India were initiated, and at his invitation, the President of India, H.E. Draupadi Murmu, paid a state visit to Suriname in the context of the celebration of 150 years of Hindostani Immigration. Shortly thereafter, the Speaker of the House (Chairperson of Parliament) of India, Mr. Om Birla, also visited Suriname with a delegation.
I personally experienced Mr. Chandrikapersad Santokhi as a person with, among others, the following (leadership) qualities: innovative, driven, authoritative, efficient, strategic, quick thinker, workaholic (long working hours/less rest), direct, sometimes strict, strong communication skills (written and oral), persuasive, a good listener, unifying ability, humorous, faithful, respectful, patriotic, empathetic, courageous, visionary, motivating, problem-solving, clear, etc. From the dualistic nature of creation, he naturally, like every human being—including myself—also had less favorable traits. Let us take the good and eliminate the less good or even the bad.
Suriname will miss him greatly, both as a leader and as a human being. We all have a mission to fulfill in this world, and in my opinion, he tried to carry it out to the best of his ability. Let us all focus on our mission and, in unity, with love and without hatred toward one another, work on the further development of Suriname. We will all have to leave the material world one day!

Een Oprechte Dank voor uw Inspanningen!
Het plotselinge heengaan van onze gewezen President van de Republiek Suriname Z.E. Chandrikapersad Santokhi is bij mij, zoals ongetwijfeld bij velen, ervaren als donderslag bij heldere hemel. Middels deze wens ik oprecht mijn dankbaarheid te betuigen voor alle inspanningen die hij voor onze natie in het algemeen maar specifiek voor vele religieuze organisaties in Suriname heeft gepleegd. Ik wens eveneens kort een paar markante momenten met/over hem op zijn (aardse) afscheidsdag publiekelijk te stellen.
Mijn eerste ontmoeting met hem was toen hij fungeerde als minister van Justitie en Politie. Vanwege mijn nauwe betrokkenheid als Pandit bij het (algemeen) religieus gebeuren in Suriname maar ook (toen) specifiek als Geestelijke Verzorger van de diverse Penitentiaire Inrichtingen adviseerde ik hem voor de implementatie van vele zaken regarderende het geestelijke welzijn van gedetineerden maar ook politieambtenaren. Een belangrijke in deze was o.a. de indiensttreding van geestelijken vanuit de diverse denominaties bij het Korps Politie Suriname , zoals wij die kennen (Aalmoezeniers) bij het Nationaal Leger Suriname. Hij stond er zeer positief voor en er werd een traject uitgezet, maar na de machtswisseling in het jaar 2010 kwam er helaas, voor mij v.w. tot nog toe onbekende redenen, een kink in de kabel. Ik spreek de hoop uit dat dit mooi idee alsnog gestalte kan krijgen.
Vóór de verkiezingen van 2020 vroeg hij mij als ik interesse had om de politiek in te stappen en als ik mijn krachten zou willen geven aan het volk van Suriname als parlementariër. Ik gaf hem aan dat het mijn persoonlijke opvatting is dat een voltijdse job als Geestelijke niet te combineren is met de politiek. Immers, de religie mag ook nimmer worden misbruikt voor politieke doeleinden, zeer zeker rekening houdend met de verschillende politieke kleuren van de diverse geloofsgenoten van religieuze organisaties. Na de verkiezingswinst van de VHP in het jaar 2020 benaderde hij mij wederom om vanuit andere “kanalen” mijn krachten te geven waarop ik nogmaals het voornoemde argument aan hem voorhield.
Onze relatie werd verder versterkt toen hij mij benaderde om als Pandit te fungeren bij zijn geestelijke inzwering als staatshoofd met de desbetreffende hymnen in het Sanskrit. Zelfs de Prime-Minister van India Z.E. Narendra Modi raakte hiervan onder de indruk en plaatste deze video op zijn post. In januari 2022 legde ik als nieuwbakken Voorzitter van de Vereniging Sanatan Dharm Maha Sabha Suriname samen met het hoofdbestuur een officieel bezoek bij hem af op het Presidentieel Paleis. Sindsdien heb ik het voorrecht en genoegen gehad om vanuit diverse commissies met veelal een religieus karakter of overlapping mijn bijdrage te leveren.
In november 2022 brak er een bijzonder moment aan waarbij ik als één van de adviseurs fungeerde bij de voorbereidingen om deel te nemen aan de Pravási Bhártíya Divas die gehouden zou worden van 8-10 januari 2023 te Indore in India. Ik had het voorrecht om als lid van een regeringsdelegatie onder leiding van hem af te reizen naar India voor deelname aan deze belangrijke Internationale Diaspora Conferentie. Tijdens deze 17e Wereldconferentie werd hij door de President van India H.E. Draupadi Murmu onderscheiden met de Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (hoogste onderscheiding binnen de Indiase Diaspora voor uitzonderlijke prestaties). Het zaad voor mijn persoonlijke interesse voor de Hindu Diaspora is in principe hier gelegd. Door dit bezoek van hem zijn hierna vele bilaterale projecten tussen Suriname en India geïnitieerd en op uitnodiging van hem had de President van India H.E. Draupadi Murmu i.h.k.v. de viering van 150 jaar Hindostaanse Immigratie een staatsbezoek afgelegd aan Suriname. Kort hierna heeft ook de Speaker of the House (Voorzitter van het Parlement) van India de heer Om Birla met delegatie Suriname aangedaan.
De heer Chandrikapersad Santokhi heb ik persoonlijk ervaren als een mens met o.a. de volgende (leiderschaps)kwaliteiten; innovatief, gedreven, gezag stralend, efficiënt, strateeg, snelle denker, workaholic (lange werktijden/minder rust), direct, soms streng, sterke communicatieve eigenschappen (schriftelijk en mondeling), overtuigingskracht, luisterend oor, bindingskracht, humoristisch, gelovig, respectvol, vaderlandsliefhebber, empathisch, moedig, visionair, motiverend, probleemoplossend, duidelijk etc. Vanuit het dualistische karakter van de schepping had hij vanzelfsprekend zoals elk mens, dus inclusief mijn persoon, ook de minder goede eigenschappen. Laten wij het goede tot ons nemen en het minder goede of zelfs slechte elimineren.
Suriname zal hem als leider maar ook als mens bijzonder missen. Wij hebben allemaal een opdracht te vervullen op deze wereld en deze heeft hij naar mijn mening met zijn beste vermogen getracht uit te voeren. Laten we ons allemaal focussen op onze opdracht en in eenheid, met liefde en zonder haat voor elkaar, werken aan de verdere ontwikkeling van Suriname. Wij zullen allemaal het materiële eens moeten verlaten!
Nogmaals, een oprechte dank voor uw inspanningen! Op basis van de Wet van Wederkerigheid zult u de vruchten van uw daden verkrijgen. Moge de Almachtige u een goede plaats toebedelen in het hiernamaals.
