Rio de Janeiro brought us together — and together, we are changing HIV care.

From March 26–28, 2026, advocates, healthcare workers, researchers, community leaders and NGO representatives from 26 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean gathered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the Person-Centred Care Advocacy Academy — organized by the International AIDS Society (IAS).

Over three powerful days at the Windsor Florida Hotel, fellows explored what it truly means to put people at the centre of HIV care — not just as patients, but as partners, decision-makers and experts of their own lives.

✅ What is Person-Centred Care (PCC) and why it matters in the HIV response
✅ Motivational interviewing & community-led monitoring
✅ Real-world site visits in Rio — including Redes da Maré, INI-Fiocruz & Grupo Arco-Íris
✅ Clinical perspectives on advanced HIV disease & ageing with HIV
✅ Differentiated service delivery models
✅ Effective communications & ethical storytelling
✅ How to structure a powerful advocacy pitch
✅ PCC case studies — including gender-affirming care and community voices in global forums

This academy was more than training — it was a launchpad for advocacy action plans that will shape HIV services across our region.

Facilitator – LGBTQ2IA+ Advocacy and Allyship Training (Suriname)

Are you passionate about LGBTQ2IA+ rights, advocacy, and social inclusion? Do you have experience facilitating trainings on human rights, gender equality, and SOGIESC issues?
The Caribbean Vulnerable Communities (CVC), through the Building Bricks Initiative, is seeking a qualified local facilitator in Suriname to lead a 3-day face-to-face LGBTQ2IA+ Advocacy and Allyship Training aimed at strengthening advocacy skills and building stronger allies for the LGBTQ2IA+ community.
This training will bring together community members, activists, educators, organizations, and allies who want to support and advance LGBTQ2IA+ rights and inclusion.

10 working days in total:
• 6 days preparation
• 3 days training facilitation
• 1 day reporting

👥 Who Should Apply
Applicants should:
• Be residents of Suriname
• Have experience facilitating trainings or workshops
• Have knowledge of LGBTQ2IA+ issues, gender equality, advocacy, and human rights
• Have strong communication, presentation, and facilitation skills
• Preferably hold a degree in social sciences, human rights, law, gender studies, or related fields

Today we pause. Not for a photoshoot. Not for a campaign that disappears by March 9th. We pause to actually name the women who hold this region together.

The fish vendor who is up before sunrise. The cleaner who never gets a thank-you. The market vendor in Gonâve who lost everything in the flood and came back anyway. The adult literacy teacher in Lethem who teaches women older than herself, every Thursday, for free. The farmer in Cedros who knows more about soil health than any report ever written about her. The babysitter, the cook, the school principal, the manager, the politician who got there despite every door that stayed closed.

From St. Lucia to Belize. From Paramaribo to Port of Spain. From the interior to the coast.

This International Women's Day, Uwamito Consulting says this clearly: Caribbean women are not just resilient. They are the reason there is anything left to be resilient about.
