The hidden history of Suriname’s First Peoples”
“This is the archive that must never disappear.”
Long before any colonizer arrived, the original inhabitants were already here. Their knowledge of medicinal plants, sacred rivers, and the living forest is a cultural archive, one that grows smaller with every generation.
A landmark moment:
In 2015, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights ruled that Suriname had violated the land rights of the First peoples. The court ordered restitution, legal recognition of their territories, and a fund for their communities
Yet today:
Their original rights are still not recognized.
Their ancestral lands remain under threat because of mining, logging, and government neglect.
The 2015 ruling has never been fully enforced.
Ask yourself: What if your history was erased from the books? Share this post to demand justice and keep their archive alive.
