Protecting marine turtles requires strong science, meaningful community engagement and sustained action.

At Shell Beach Protected Area—one of the region’s most significant nesting grounds—WWF-Guianas is conducting a comprehensive, community-informed assessment of the threats affecting these endangered species. Led in Guyana by our Ocean Officer, Ms Diana Fernandes, the initiative is bringing together community members, fishers, local leaders, and Protected Areas Commission rangers to help identify practical solutions to strengthen protection for Green and Leatherback turtles.

Consultations have included locations such as Moruca, the Waini River, the Aruca River Mouth and Smith’s Creek, reinforcing WWF-Guianas’ commitment to conservation approaches shaped by the people closest to the resource.

The findings will guide a targeted threat mitigation plan aimed at improving conservation measures, deepening public awareness and supporting long-term stewardship of Guyana’s coastal biodiversity.

🌊 Celebrating World Oceans Day! 🌊

WWF-Guianas marked World Oceans Day in Guyana by unveiling five murals promoting sustainable fisheries and marine conservation. 🌊🐟🎨

These beautiful artworks, created by local artist Courtney Douglas, serve as a reminder of our responsibility to safeguard Guyana's oceans and all the life they support.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us, including our partners and representatives from organisations dedicated to marine conservation. Together, we discussed the critical role healthy oceans play in our livelihoods and food security.

The murals are set to be displayed at several key landing sites that play vital roles in Guyana’s fishing industry and fishing communities. These locations include the Upper Corentyne Fishermen’s Cooperative Society, the Rosignol Fishermen’s Cooperative Society Limited, and the Greater Georgetown Fishermen's Cooperative (Meadowbank Fisheries Landing site).

Through this observance, WWF-Guianas emphasises the shared responsibility of protecting Guyana’s marine resources and calls for practical actions to support sustainable fisheries, reduce pressure on vulnerable species, and promote long-term stewardship of coastal and marine ecosystems.

How can Indigenous knowledge, storytelling, and cultural heritage create sustainable livelihood opportunities?

Representatives from Powakka, Pierre Kondre, and Casipora recently traveled to Bakkie as part of the Sustainable Forest Livelihoods (SFL) Programme for a peer learning exchange focused on Indigenous Museum development and cultural tourism.

Through a guided museum tour and knowledge-sharing discussions, participants explored practical lessons on creating authentic visitor experiences, preserving cultural heritage, and building sustainable community-led initiatives.
