Supporting Drought-Affected Families in South Galkayo

Save Somali Women and Children - SSWC, in partnership with the Centre for Peace and Democracy - CPD and with generous funding from the Start Network, has successfully completed the first cycle of Multi-Purpose Cash Assistance (MPCA) under the Early Response to Drought in Mudug Region Project.

Through this intervention, 559 vulnerable households across Carafad, Hayan, Bantu 3, Doxa Mudug IDP settlements, and Daagari Village in South Galkayo District received life-saving assistance.

Beneficiaries were identified through a transparent Vulnerability-Based Targeting (VBT) process to ensure support reached those facing the greatest hardship.

As recurrent drought continues to threaten lives and livelihoods, cash assistance remains a dignified and effective tool, enabling families to meet their most urgent needs, protect their well-being, and strengthen their resilience against future shocks.

extends its sincere gratitude to the Start Network for its timely financial support and to our partner, the for Peace and Democracy (CPD), for their collaboration in delivering critical humanitarian assistance to communities in need.

we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that no vulnerable family is left behind in times of crisis.

Hygiene kits distribution across IDP camps in Kahda and Daynille districts has entered its second day, marking a critical step in safeguarding the health and dignity of displaced families.

Implemented by Save Somali Women and Children - SSWC this initiative goes beyond the provision of basic supplies, it is a targeted public health intervention designed to reduce vulnerability to disease outbreaks in high-risk displacement settings.

By equipping households with essential hygiene items, the program actively promotes consistent handwashing, menstrual hygiene management, and safe water storage practices-key pillars in preventing the spread of communicable diseases.

A total of 300 households will benefit from this effort, each receiving a carefully assembled kit that includes jerricans, basins, sanitary pads, soap, and other critical supplies tailored to daily needs. For many families, these items are not just materials, they represent protection, dignity, and a renewed sense of care in challenging circumstances.

This activity is implemented under the Project 2024–2026, with the generous support of Oxfam Somali, reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening community resilience and reducing humanitarian risks.

Strengthening Resilience and Preventing Displacement Through Early Humanitarian Action.

Save Somali Women and Children - SSWC, in partnership with Oxfam Somali, is proud to announce the successful completion of the “Drought Anticipatory Action for Food Security, Water Access and Protection” project in Southern Mudug, Somalia.

Funded by Start Network, the project was implemented in Ceel-Akhwaan, Laasacadale, Docol, Baladunamin, Dagaari, Laanwaale, Bitaale, and Bandarqaali villages in Galkacyo South to respond early to worsening drought conditions and help prevent displacement of vulnerable families.

Through Vulnerability-Based Targeting (VBT), 1,075 households were supported with unconditional cash assistance for three months, receiving USD 80 per month, helping them meet urgent basic needs.

In addition, three community water sources were rehabilitated in Ceel-Akhwaan, Laasacadale, and Docol, improving access to safe water, reducing waiting times, easing pressure between people and livestock, and improving hygiene and community health.

The project also delivered hygiene promotion and protection activities, strengthening awareness and access to essential services.
Overall, the intervention reached 25,580 people (13,892 females and 11,688 males) across 8 villages through integrated support including cash assistance, water rehabilitation, hygiene promotion, and protection services.

SSWC extends sincere appreciation to Start Network, Oxfam Somali, local authorities and communities for their collaboration and support.
