Somali Research & Education Network Somali Research and Education Network (SomaliREN) is a non-profit membership-based organization founded and owned by its member institutions.

Somali Research and Education Network (SomaliREN) is a non-­profit organization whose primary goal is to promote research and quality higher education among the Somalis. It is a network whose members include the major Somali higher education institutions and exists for the sole purpose of bringing them together to collaborate on issues that matter not only to them but to the Somali community at large. The organization’s activities and programs revolve around nurturing environments conducive to research and development, an area in which the whole region seems to lag far behind. The establishment of SomaliREN sprung from the realization that the development of the research capabilities and facilities of those institutions, and the general quality of higher education is a necessary component for finding a way out of the current state of messed affairs. With the belief that knowledge is the real power and research is the only way to gain and share it, representatives of six universities convened to work towards this goal.

In collaboration with DataCite we are organizing a webinar to introduce the proposed SomaliREN–DataCite Consortium, a sustainable and cost-effective pathway for Somali institutions to access DataCite’s infrastructure, register DOIs for research outputs, and enhance the global visibility and impact of Somali research.

The webinar is open to SomaliREN members and the wider higher education and research community.

In collaboration with Internet Society Somalia Chapter, we conducted an Online Trust and Safety workshop based on the Internet Society’s OTS Toolkit. The workshop equipped participants with practical skills to recognize scams and misinformation, secure accounts and devices, and browse the internet safely.

Throughout the session, participants completed Personal Protection Plan Worksheets, enabling each of them to develop a personalized online safety action plan based on their accounts, online habits, and commitments.

We are delighted to organize a three-day Campus Network Design and Operations workshop designed to equip network professionals with practical skills in designing, building, securing, and managing modern campus network infrastructure.

The online workshop covers structured cabling, fiber optics, routing and switching, IPv4/IPv6 deployment, VLAN segmentation, network monitoring, security, firewall placement, and operational management.

This workshop is part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen the technical capacity of SomaliREN member institutions and support secure, resilient, and well-managed campus networks.
