International Youth Day was commemorated on 12 August 2026 as an opportunity to recognize the important role of young people in building peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable societies. The day highlights the contributions, challenges, and aspirations of youth around the world.
The 2026 observance provided an opportunity for young people, government institutions, civil society organizations, and development partners to discuss issues affecting youth, including education, employment, entrepreneurship, leadership, innovation, peacebuilding, and meaningful participation in decision-making.
In Somalia and across Africa, young people remain an important force for social and economic development. Their skills, creativity, and commitment can contribute significantly to community development, peace, good governance, and economic growth. However, continued efforts are needed to expand access to quality education, decent employment, skills training, and opportunities for youth leadership.
International Youth Day 2026 therefore served as a reminder that investing in young people is an investment in the future. Young people should not only be viewed as beneficiaries of development but also as active partners and leaders in creating solutions for their communities and countries.
Conclusion:

International Youth Day 2026 reaffirmed the importance of empowering young people, listening to their voices, and creating meaningful opportunities for them to participate in shaping a better future. Governments, communities, and development partners should continue working together to ensure that every young person has the opportunity to learn, work, lead, and contribute to society.
