Strengthening Food Security and Agricultural Resilience in Jowhar District
Wadajir Rural Development Organization (WARDO) successfully implemented the Provision of Mechanized Land Preparation Services under the Somalia Humanitarian Fund (SHF) Standard Allocation 2 (SA2) 2025 Pilot Flagship Initiative.
Implemented from 15 March to 30 April 2026, the intervention supported vulnerable and crisis-affected agro-pastoral households across five priority villages in Jowhar District, Middle Shabelle, Somalia: Buulo Waraay, Bayaxaaw, Barrow Weyne, Shiidle Bari and Lebiga.
Key achievements:
• 923 vulnerable households received mechanized land preparation services
• 2,200 tractor hours were delivered and verified
• 5 villages were reached through coordinated service delivery
• 100% of the targeted household coverage and tractor hours were achieved
The intervention addressed a critical barrier to food production identified through community engagement: the lack of timely land preparation and limited access to agricultural labour. By providing tractor-based ploughing, WARDO enabled vulnerable farmers—including female-headed households, elderly farmers and asset-poor households—to prepare their farmland efficiently and on time for the main planting season.
The activity was implemented through close engagement with community representatives, village elders and women’s groups, while coordination with humanitarian and development partners helped strengthen convergence and reduce duplication of assistance.
Despite operational challenges, including temporary equipment breakdowns and rain-related access constraints, adaptive planning and community coordination enabled the activity to reach its intended targets.
Prepared land creates the foundation for productive planting, stronger livelihoods and improved food security. Through integrated, community-driven approaches, WARDO continues to support crisis-affected communities in strengthening resilience and reducing reliance on negative coping strategies.
