For many years, the participation of girls in sports in Somalia was almost nonexistent, largely due to fear, social pressure, and systematic restrictions. In response to these challenges, the Somali Women Journalists Rights Association (SOWJRA) has taken a bold and historic step by establishing, for the first time, strong and independent women’s sports teams.
This initiative aims to empower girls to participate in sports without fear or intimidation, while also using sport as a platform to advocate against violence and abuses targeting girls and women. Through this effort, SOWJRA seeks to create safe spaces for girls to build confidence, develop their talents, and play a visible and influential role in the growth of sports and social change in the country.
The initiative has been supported by Onside Fund, whose contribution has helped make this milestone for women’s sports and empowerment possible.
