Strengthening Market Systems Resilience through Learning and Collaboration

Mandhere Relief and Development Organization-MARDO participated in a four-day Market Systems Resilience training and Output 3 progress meeting in Mogadishu, focusing on market-system mapping, solutions design, and sustainable approaches to strengthening local markets.

The three-day training at Hotel Peace explored corridor analysis and solutions design, emphasizing the importance of understanding market dynamics, addressing systemic challenges, and promoting local ownership and sustainability.

On the fourth day, we presented progress under the Output 3 workstream, highlighting our support to Self-Help Groups , engagement of SHG facilitators, and market-system mapping exercise. The meeting provided an opportunity to share implementation progress and exchange learning with stakeholders.

We remain committed to evidence-informed programming and collaborative approaches that strengthen market systems, promote sustainable livelihoods, and deliver lasting benefits for communities.

Flood Risk Assessment in Hudur

As part of our (ERP), we worked alongside the District El Niño Committee and village leaders to assess flood-prone areas in , identify floodwater entry points, and determine potential sites for water diversion structures.
The findings will inform targeted flood risk reduction measures, including the construction of water diversion structures and sandbag embankments, aimed at mitigating flood impacts and protecting communities, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure.

Building Skills, Creating Opportunities in Baidoa!
How can practical skills open doors to sustainable livelihoods?
Through the , Mandhere Relief and Development Organization-MARDO is supporting 125 learners across several TVET centres in to acquire practical, market-relevant skills that can strengthen their livelihoods and economic opportunities.

The training covers solar system installation, beauty salon services, tailoring, mobile phone repair, mechanics, and tie-dye techniques. The learners come from two cooperative societies, and , reflecting the programme’s commitment to strengthening vocational skills and promoting economic empowerment.

With support from the World Food Programme (WFP), is contributing to skills development by equipping learners with practical competencies to pursue employment, establish small businesses, and build more sustainable livelihoods.

Through these efforts, we aim to strengthen local capacities, expand livelihood opportunities, and contribute to resilient communities.

In remote areas like Waney Village in the rural of the Bakool Region, access to basic healthcare can be a daily struggle. That is why Mandhere Relief and Development Organization-MARDO, with the generous support of the United Nations OCHA Somalia

(SHF), is on the ground delivering life-saving nutrition services directly to the heart of vulnerable communities.
Our dedicated mobile nutrition outreach teams are actively conducting vital malnutrition screenings for children under five, identifying at-risk children early, and immediately referring them for appropriate treatment. These crucial activities significantly improve direct access to essential, life-saving nutrition care for pregnant women, lactating mothers, and families living in hard-to-reach rural zones.
Every child deserves a healthy start, no matter how remote their village is. We are incredibly grateful to our teams and partners for making this critical work possible every single day. 🙏✨

We collaborated directly on the ground alongside the Southwest State Ministry of Energy & Water Resources, the Southwest State Ministry of Health, the local WASH Cluster, and fellow humanitarian and development actors.
This active participation highlights our continued dedication to driving sustainable behavioral changes, improving sanitation infrastructure, and safeguarding vulnerable households from preventable waterborne illnesses across the region.

MARDO Participates in AARAN Quarterly State Coordination Unit Meeting
We are pleased to have participated in the (Advancing Adaptation through Resilient Mobility and Natural Capital) Programme’s Quarterly State Coordination Unit (SCU) Meeting, which brought together consortium partners, government representatives, and community stakeholders to review progress, share lessons learned, and strengthen coordination.
The meeting brought together partners alongside government representatives from the Southwest State Ministry of Planning and Investment, Bay Regional Administration, Baidoa District Municipality, and the Southwest State IDP Commission. Community representatives from CREWs and DAC Fora also participated, ensuring that community perspectives remained central to the discussions.
Discussions focused on quarterly achievements and challenges, preparedness for the upcoming Deyr rainy season and potential El Niño-related flooding, and strengthening collaboration between government institutions and humanitarian partners to improve service delivery and build community resilience.
We appreciate the continued collaboration of our consortium partners, government institutions, and community representatives in advancing climate adaptation, strengthening resilience, and promoting locally led solutions to the challenges facing vulnerable communities.

STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY AWARENESS OF DEYR RAINS AND EL NIÑO RISKS IN WAJID

Mandhere Relief and Development Organization-MARDO took part in community awareness-raising activities in Wajid District, Bakool Region, alongside district authorities and humanitarian partners, to raise awareness of the potential risks associated with the Deyr rainy season and El Niño.

Through these efforts, we joined other stakeholders in promoting early preparedness, raising awareness of potential heavy rainfall and flooding, and encouraging preventive measures to protect lives, livelihoods, and property.

We recognize that children, older persons, internally displaced people (IDPs), and other vulnerable community members may face heightened risks during emergencies. We therefore emphasize the importance of community vigilance, timely preparedness, and coordinated action to reduce the impact of weather-related hazards.

At , we remain committed to working with local authorities, humanitarian partners, and communities to strengthen disaster preparedness, protect vulnerable populations, and build community resilience.

Strengthening Climate-Resilient Agriculture in Elbarde District!

Under the , in partnership with , we supported 50 local farmers from four target villages—Emilow, Oondhere, Danshot, and Lawareeg—to successfully complete comprehensive training on establishing climate-resilient permagardens.

Through hands-on sessions at a demonstration plot in Emilow village, we equipped farmers with practical skills in sustainable land preparation, proper sowing techniques, and efficient water management.

The demonstration site is strategically located next to a shallow well undergoing rehabilitation and solarization, promoting sustainable, solar-powered irrigation. To support the application of their newly acquired skills, we also provided all participating farmers with quality seeds and essential farming tools to establish household permagardens in their communities.
