On Behalf of Livelihood Relief and Development Organization Mr Abdirahman Amin Osman has participated in three days workshops that occurred Badio Region from 13 to 15 August 2024 that workshop was help by UNICEF, it covered the environment and The impacts of climate change on minority and marginalized communities include:
1. Flooding: Frequent floods damage soil fertility on their riverine farms.
2. Drought: Prolonged droughts force minority clans to abandon their farms and villages, leading them to seek refuge in IDP camps where they face severe food shortages.
3. Health Risks: Climate change introduces new airborne diseases in areas inhabited by minority clans.
4. Transportation Disruption: Heavy rains cause flooding that disrupts ground transportation, hindering their small-scale trade activities.
5. Agricultural Challenges: The recurring cycle of floods, landslides, and droughts discourages minority riverine communities from growing cereals and vegetables, making them reliant on food and cash assistance from organizations like the WFP.
6. Displacement: Damage to crops and livestock forces minority and marginalized communities to abandon their original homes.
This report by LRDO outlines the effects on minority and marginalized groups living along the banks of the Jubba and Shabelle rivers in Somalia.
Recommendation
To address this ongoing emergency, it is crucial that UN agencies, the World Bank, and other international aid organizations invest in support for these minority riverine farming communities.
