Failed rainy seasons are driving a worsening displacement crisis in Somalia.

Drought is now the main driver of displacement across five of Somalia’s hardest-hit districts, accounting for 75% of displacement in affected areas as families struggle with severe water shortages, food insecurity and loss of livelihoods.

Communities are being forced to leave their homes in search of water and survival.

IOM and partners are responding to support affected communities, but the scale and speed of needs are rapidly exceeding available resources.

Investing in water access, resilient infrastructure, rural livelihoods and climate resilience is critical to help communities withstand future shocks and reduce displacement.

From losing over 200 goats to rebuilding her life through business, Hodan’s story is one of resilience in the face of drought.

After losing their livelihood to repeated climate shocks, Hodan and her family received support through small business grants in Doolow — helping her open a shop that now sells clothes, food, and vegetables.

“Now the shop is running well. It has changed my life.”

Across Somalia, climate shocks continue to push families to adapt, rebuild and find new ways forward. Stories like Hodan’s show how investing in livelihoods can help communities move beyond survival toward stability and resilience.
