Mogadishu, Somalia | 12 September 2026: The Federation of Somali Trade Unions (FESTU) is participating in a 3-day (12-14) National Consultation and Validation Workshop on the National Competition and Consumer Protection Policy, which was officially launched today in Mogadishu, Somalia.

The meeting organised by the Wasaaradda Ganacsiga iyo Warshadaha - Soomaaliya, with funding from the World Bank. The three-day consultation brings together representatives from government, the private sector, trade unions and employers.

During the consultation, FESTU called the importance of SDG 8, emphasising that fair and competitive markets should contribute not only to economic growth and business development, but also to decent jobs, fair working conditions and the protection of workers’ rights, in line with national and international labour standards ratified by Somalia.

FESTU applauds the Ministry Commerce and Industry for maintaining and strengthening social dialogue, ensuring that all relevant stakeholders have meaningful space to participate in the formulation of policies that are important to the people of Somalia.

Trade union leaders from across the Horn of Africa gathered in Mogadishu today as the General Assembly of the Horn of Africa Confederation of Trade Unions (HACTU) opened, hosted by the Federation of Somali Trade Unions (FESTU).

The two-day gathering brings together HACTU-affiliated national trade union centres, Somali government ministers and senior representatives of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the International Labour Organization (ILO). The meeting is supported by the ILO with funding from the European Union (EU).

The General Assembly was officially opened by Professor Salim Alio Ibro, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs of Somalia, reflecting the strong social dialogue and constructive relations between the Somali government and the trade union movement.

Ambassador Jamal Mohamed Hassan, Minister of Commerce and Industry, brought the trade dimension into the discussions, linking growing regional and continental economic integration with decent jobs and workers’ rights. He stressed that as Somalia expands its participation in regional trade, working people must also share in the opportunities and benefits.

Mr Khumbula Ndaba, ILO Country Director for Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia, Sudan and South Sudan and Special Representative to the African Union, IGAD and UNECA, addressed the gathering on decent work, labour mobility, social dialogue and the need for stronger regional cooperation.

Speaking on behalf of the IGAD Executive Secretary, Ambassador Moussa Ali Meigague, IGAD Director of Health and Social Development, stressed IGAD’s commitment to working with HACTU, its officially recognised regional workers’ organisation, to advance labour, employment and social priorities across the Horn of Africa.

HACTU President Dr Sirralkhatim Mohamed and General Secretary Kassahun Follo set out the priorities of the regional trade union movement. FESTU General Secretary Omar Faruk Osman, welcoming delegates on behalf of the host organisation, called for stronger solidarity and practical cooperation among trade unions across borders.

Over the two days, union leaders are discussing how to strengthen regional trade union solidarity, contribute to peace and stability and build a stronger collective voice for workers. The agenda also covers free movement of persons, fair labour mobility, protection of migrant workers, transhumance and regional trade.

The gathering comes as the Horn of Africa is becoming increasingly connected through trade, movement and regional integration. For HACTU and its affiliates, workers must be part of shaping that future, with their rights protected and their voices heard.

At the inaugural Africa Care Forum, convened by the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa, the Federation of Somali Trade Unions - FESTU was proud to represent Somalia and its working people.

As Africa advances its Common African Position on Care Work, we pushed for a strong, rights-based collective position because care is work and care is a public good.

FESTU called for labour rights and human rights to be firmly anch**ed in Africa’s care agenda and for social partners to have a meaningful role through genuine social dialogue.

For Somalia, this is about dignity, decent work, social protection and ensuring that care workers are recognised, valued and protected.

Africa’s care agenda must work for those who provide care as much as for those who receive it.

Mogadishu, Somalia | 30 August 2026: The Federation of Somali Trade Unions - FESTU convened a two-day National Social Dialogue (29-30) on Transitioning from Charcoal Trade to Sustainable Livelihoods, bringing together key stakeholders to examine the social, economic and environmental impacts of Somalia’s charcoal economy and explore practical pathways towards sustainable livelihoods and decent work.

The workshop held under the theme “National Social Dialogue Forum on Transitioning from Charcoal Trade to Sustainable Livelihoods,” the dialogue has provided a platform for stakeholders to exchange experiences, perspectives and priorities on the transition away from dependence on charcoal, with a particular focus on ensuring that workers, communities and vulnerable groups are not left behind.

The programme organised by FESTU with support from the International Labour Organization (ILO), the dialogue brings together representatives of FESTU and its 12 affiliated workers’ organisations, government, employers, women and youth representatives, and civil society. Participants have discussed the challenges faced by workers and communities whose livelihoods are linked to the charcoal economy, as well as sustainable alternatives and the measures required to support an inclusive and fair transition.

The meeting was led by Hussein Mohamed, Deputy General Secretary of FESTU, emphasised that the transition away from charcoal-related livelihoods must be guided by meaningful social dialogue and ensure that workers and communities are protected from economic hardship. He stressed the need to strengthen workers’ rights and access to decent employment, skills development, social protection and sustainable livelihood opportunities, while ensuring that environmental protection measures are accompanied by practical and realistic alternatives for affected communities. The meeting was also attended by officials from the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (MoLSA), representatives of employers as well as the International Labour Organization (ILO), reflecting the importance of tripartite cooperation and social dialogue in addressing the challenges of the transition.

Discussions also reviewed practical pathways towards sustainable livelihoods, with a focus on protecting livelihoods, promoting decent work and supporting communities affected by the transition. Trade unions agreed on the importance of continued dialogue and coordinated action to contribute to an inclusive and just transition away from dependence on charcoal.

The Federation of Somali Trade Unions - FESTU today actively engaged in the National Consultation on Somalia’s National Child Labour Policy and National Action Plan on the Elimination of Child Labour, organised by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs with the support of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

The consultation, officially opened by the Director General of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Abdilaahi Hassan Adan, brought together officials from the Federal Government of Somalia and the Federal Member States. Leaders of FESTU and the Somali Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) addressed and actively contributed to the consultation, representing workers and employers, respectively, and demonstrating tripartite cooperation with social dialogue at the centre of efforts to eliminate child labour.

FESTU’s engagement builds on more than a decade of sustained action against child labour. In January 2014, with the support of the ILO, FESTU launched a national campaign for the elimination of child labour, which included advocacy for Somalia’s ratification of ILO Convention No. 182 on the Worst Forms of Child Labour. The campaign contributed to Somalia’s ratification of the Convention on 20 March 2014.

Twelve years later, FESTU applauds the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs and the ILO for spearheading the development of the National Child Labour Policy and Action Plan as a significant step toward effectively eliminating child labour, protecting Somali children and creating decent work.
